Street Photography: Definitions – What is it?

There are numerous definitions for Street Photography.

Henri Cartier-Bresson, the god of street photography defined it as:

“A photograph is the simultaneous recognition… of the meaning of an event and the precise organization of forms.”

There is a candidness about his photos for sure, even those where his subjects are looking at the camera.

Many other definitions of Street Photography over the years.

Lorenzo Marmo (Journal of Studies in Photography):

“Street photography has a ‘layered and elusive identity’.”

I have been criticized, in that some images of individuals or groups that I post look very ‘posed’.
My main subject matter is tourists at a place called Table Rock, Niagara Falls, Canada.

This is where the Falls go over the edge.

As a result ...  I’m normally taking photos of people taking photos.
Many of these, not all, are inherently ‘posed’ photos.

Oft times, I will hi-jack a photo op by someone.
They are taking a photo of girlfriend or family or some such and photograph that person or group also.

And in so doing, some people will ‘feel’ the camera on them and zone in on me.

A great quote on the subject by Meir Wigoder:
(and if one must adhere to definitions, this one gives great latitude.)

“So much has already been written about street photography that one tends to forget that there is no definite and absolute definition of the topic. Rather, it has become a generalized term to define both the subject (the street, the people in the street, the shops, the neighbourhood and urban photography in general) and the activity of the photographer, acting either as a social documentarist or a free-roaming spirit projectin

g his/her own artistic inclinations on any movement in the street that stimulates his/her associative mind.”

My intention and hope with my photos of this area is to communicate a bit of the love, activity and diversity of emotionsand, well, just the  people.

Enjoy.
