outstanding interactive workshop for all beginners and many intermediates. September 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am teaching a class in beginning photography and we focus all of our attention on creating images rather than post-production manipulation and repair. Although I have my own collection of shots for lecture/discussion and we create new ones weekly, this workshop by canon provides a surprisingly comprehensive introduction to many aspects of photography from 'capturing the elusive moment' to learning 'the distinctions between focal point and depth of field', to 'exploring the inticacies of exposure (through combining shutter speed and aperture settings)', to 'the subtleties of composition'. The program teaches 'the rules' of photography and then, through example and interactive practice, challenges the viewer to break those rules with intentionality.
I was impressed with the creativity of their means to make these lessons come alive for the viewer. For example, when capturing the moment, they create a moving scene (kayaker dropping through falls) and you trip the shutter for three shots of your choosing and then review how well you anticipated the action. Composition workshops allow you to move and crop images revealing new insights of the same images for new photographers. A lighting workshop done vitually out in the sun, reveals how sun direction in relation to subject influences the outcome. It then allows you to fill-in with on-camera or off-camera flash to see the influence of added light to a daylight scene.
Throughout all of these workshops you have the opportunity to get pro-tips on the given topic. In other words, you can experiment on your own through their guided interactive exploratory workshops or you can get the canon (professional) commentary about what it is you are (or could be) learning from the given workshop.
Such creative and interactive means of teaching most every basic topic for a new photographer create an outstanding educational opportunity for a generation of picture takers whose cameras are so technically advanced that it causes them never to break beyond mediocrity in their work.
As a long-time semi-pro photographer (I am a ecologist/professor for a living) and a professor of photography as well, I strongly recommend this workshop for anyone interested in taking more than just snap shots.
Hope this helps.
