From an amatuer September 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am still taking all the lessons I can find. The first chore of organizing photos seems excessively cumbersome for my purposes. I have always kept my pictures in folders that are event and/or people oriented.
I hope I can master the editing because it seems much more complex than ealier editions and other Photo programs I have used. It certainly has a lot of power, but it seems more than I need, and uses a lot of RAM.
Not Terrible, but Not Very Good Either September 3, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Basically, I like what Photoshop Elements is trying to do. But it doesn't handle storing very many photos before it starts slowing down. And it will start lagging for very long periods of time too.
If there were no other options, I would keep trying to make it work. But Google has released "Picasa", which is essentially the same kind of tool. And Picasa is way better, and free too. (I am NOT affiliated with Google... Just very happy to find a really good photo management and basic editing package)
Love Photoshop Album, still learning the Elements editing part August 31, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have used Adobe Photoshop 2 for about 3 years and LOVE the Album portion for organizing and tagging my photos. My photo editing attempts have never been more than cropping & red eye, but I wanted to learn more, so here we go. New laptop & PSE 5. I did have a serious problem when I tried to import the catalog from PS 2. Like the other reviewer, I lost the entire catalog of over 10,000 photos. I was able to recover it from a backup on a hard drive with a LOT of frustration and effort. If you want to try the organization/tagging features and simple editing, download the FREE PS 3.2 version from Adobe. I did this for my mom and it is plenty of features for her purposes. (You do need to register, or it locks up after a month.) Try it, and if you need more, buy this program.
Wonderful product for a novice like me August 30, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Well, I read quite a few reviews about memory leaks, sluggish performance and lack of training material or documentation. I must say that for a novice like me and a first time Photopshop user or for that matter a first time graphics editing software user, I found Photoshop Elements 5 to be terrific and especially in comparison to Paintshop Pro XI. I first downloaded a trial version of Paintshop pro. While it had some good features, it was really slow, had bugs like the application crashing and closing on its own. Also the lack of convenient and very sluggish text editing caused lots of problems for my CD template design. Then I gave Photoshop Elements 5 a try and found it to be comparatively very fast. No performance issues, not at all sluggish on my laptop that does have a Core duo processor and is relatively a new and high end laptop. So one would imagine that there will be no performance issues on desktops that are fairly recent. Of course, it is common sense that one must use machines with good processors and memory for graphics editing, it is unreasonable to expect a lot of features for this price and a thin high performance software that just flies. Text editing features are wonderful in comparision to Paint shop pro.
Lastly on the training material and learning curve, I became familiar with this in a few hours and had no problems using it at all. Remember that I have never worked in Photoshop or any serious graphics editing software earlier and am a complete novice except for a few bitmaps that I created on MS Paint. I was able to design my CD templates very well. Not sure what people are complaining about lack of instructions. I found the help files useful whenever I got stuck and anyone with basic aptitude on applications like MS office should be able to figure it out quite easily. I also did some photo editing and got some good results. While some of the advanced features may definitely require more documentation as some of the others here mention, I am sure there is no point in making a serious issue of lack of documentation or performance, especially for the 100 bucks that gives you Photoshop software.
Go for it.
It Takes Some Work But It's Worth It! August 30, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Adobe delivers an excellent program for organizing and editing your photos. The only catch is that they do a mediocre job in explaining how to use the program to its fullest, which leaves you in one of two positions...either (1) experiment a lot with trial and error, or (2) buy a companion guide or manual to speed up the learning process [Kelby and Brundage have written some very good books]. Either route requires effort, but the program is certainly worth the effort.
