5 out of 5 stars My favorite magazine of all time   October 27, 2001
National Geographic is a truly great magazine. Fascinating articles, and of course, the most beautiful photos of people and places. Very interesting and educational from cover to cover. I think this should be required reading for all Americans.

5 out of 5 stars A Definite Keeper   October 27, 2001

It's strange--I would never consider saving any of my other magazine subscriptions, but somehow I have every single copy of National Geographic going back to the 1960s. It's just the type of magazine that you can go back to, decades later, leaf through it and discover something new (or old, as the case may be). In a perfect world, I would also have enough space to display my favorite fold-out maps from this magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Travel the world from your couch   October 27, 2001

I've got 30 years of "National Geographic" on CD-Rom, new issues, and
back issues from my grandparents.

There is no more complete magazine about the world. Whether it's
anthropology, geology, geography, entomology, etymology, paleontology,
astrology, zoology, oceanography -- this magazine has touched base
there and will return. The magazine's contributing photographers
include all the best nature photographers in the world (like David
Doubilet, example ISBN: 0714838284) and award winning photographers of
many other styles.

The magazine isn't of hard science but this is to its credit. The
subjects are covered in a way that is always educational to laymen and
eminently interesting to professionals. It's the best way to know
what's going on now and has gone on in the natural world.

I cannot think of another magazine that is so consistently pleasing
and positive on so many levels; visually, intellectually, in its dept!h
of subject. Even small children can enjoy it simply because of the
beautiful, colorful pictures.

If you've never read it (!), pick up a copy to see. If you like it as
much as half the world does, subscribe.

5 out of 5 stars The World Around Us   October 27, 2001

This magazine has been around for over 100 years, and with the high quality of the paper, the photograhs, and the content it could likely be around for another 100 years. I am amazed each month opening the latest issue to learn about topics ranging from Arctic Alaska, to Egyptian Mummys, to foriegn cultures and lifestyles. Lately, a favorite feature of mine has been the monthly zip-code piece. The magazine takes an in-depth look at a zip-code in the United States. I gain a deeper appreciation for my world through this subscription.

3 out of 5 stars Too few pictures, too small articles!   October 26, 2001

I really wanted to give 4 stars to this one, but I can't, nor even 4. I have been repeatedly disappointed by articles being too short on subjects I was esp. interested in (wildlife mostly), too long on others (geography / anthropology), and not technical enough. The latter might be a good thing if you're absolutely allergic to science, but take into account that I am not a scientist. When I say that something is not technical enough, it really means that it's superficial... Other than that, the articles are well written.

The pictures are excellent, and that's what motivates me to give 3 stars. However, I often wish there would be more of them...

Note that nearly each issue includes a large format folded map or some kind of graphic display illustrating the main article. From my point of view, this is quite a waste of money, since I don't use those much. They're probably perfect if you want to discuss the article with teenagers though. Personnally,! I wish there were no maps and more pictures.

I am not going to renew my subscription, but this is more a fit issue than a judgement of the quality of the product. I encourage people to buy a single issue before deciding.
