4 out of 5 stars Good photo magazine for product reviews   November 20, 2004

Popular Photography & Imaging has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the best photography magazines available, yet it's not nearly as well-written or informative as it was prior to its merging with Modern Photography (If you are interested in checking this out, compare a current issue with one written back in the 1970's for example.). It remains useful for its product reviews, but these - especially of lenses - tend to be rather subjective, and not nearly as critical as a potential user might wish for. And worse yet for an avid amateur or professional photographer, the articles tend to be aimed towards novices, or at least are written as though they would be understood best only by novices. The only redeeming features are Herb Keppler's thoughtful insights on photography and occasional articles which are well written and edited. Otherwise, I would recommend taking a look at other photography magazines, most notably Shutterbug, which I have found to be more useful.

2 out of 5 stars It's all about the reviews   August 4, 2004

This definitely a magazine for gearheads. It's pretty much just equipment reviews and advertisements. I would have given it a higher rating but for two things:

1) I don't think I've ever seen Popular Photography not LOVE any piece of equipment. The reviews can still be useful if you're just wondering what features the new gizmo has, but still, they ought to be a bit more critical if they're going to be such a review based magazine.

2) Many of the ads are from vendors with bad reputations. I believe they make some sort of claim about requiring a certain level of honesty from anyone they sell ad space from, but it sure doesn't look like they have ever kicked anyone out of the magazine to me.

So what do you have when you have a magazine full of uncritical reviews, the occasional beginnerish article about technique, and a lot ads from stores of dubious virtue? At best a 2 star magazine.

1 out of 5 stars garbage   February 22, 2004

I am cross posting this most of these photo magazines are published by the same company under a different name. I have read them ALL!

First, 77%+ of this magazine is advertisements. That leaves under 25% of material. The material that does remain is bare minimum informational and tends to just show "pretty photos". Coverage on camera gear appears skewed since EVERYTHING is GREAT. This leads me to believe advertisers sway them.

In short, this is an advertising pamphlet with a cover price. If you need information, typing "photography" in any search engine will give you more information in 30 seconds then a 10 year subscription.

I wrote the main company about the 77% issue and they stated that they are aware of the amount of advertisement and quoted a percentage higher then I stated. That this was necessary to continue producing a magazine of this quality.

Quality? OK, if this is quality then I don't know what to say other then the semi professional magazines are free of charge from the publishers, contain actual subjective information, and are produced on high quality paper with fewer than 30% advertising.

2 out of 5 stars Not a big fan of the magazine...   February 1, 2004
Very basic info in every issue. Ok for someone who has never used a camera but not very useful for someone who wants to expand creatively and technically.

5 out of 5 stars to begin and continue with   January 16, 2004

i heard of this magazine even before i came to this country and it never disappointed me ever since i subscribed it. i valued it most among other photography magazines i subscribed to. the reason is that i find this magazine have "real stuff". for equipment, it has a detailed and objective test. the articles are not just obscure evaluation u find elsewhere, for instance, it once said:"...based on our field and lab test, this amateur lens gives a better performance than its professional counterpart...", whereas in other magazines, what u find probably is "this lens is good, and that one is nice...". for photo tips, it is more insightful than just "sunny 16" or "always use a tripod". u can find the photographer's own consideration as to why put the composition this way but not that. in all, i think this magazine is for anyone who is interested in photography to begin and continue with
