18-55mm low cost IS Lens Review June 16, 2008 Canon has done their homework on this baby poviding a low cost alternative to Camera's with built in stabilization or their own higher end stabilized lens. I just finished using this lens for a wedding in North Carolina where lighting was very low (mostly candle-light with some moderate over-head fill. I used this along with a 420ex Speedlte for the main ceremony and was impressed with the quick response and the sharp detail of the images. I took over 500 pictures with this lens alone and after reviewing the results I can say the $170 was well worth it. While you're not getting the "L" class glass, you are getting a solid performer at a much lower price. Nothing compares in this price range (Canon, Tamron or Sigma); you have to spend at least $200 more to come close. Bottom line, this is a great low cost lens!
Great lens April 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the pictures I get out of this lens. It's not especially long at the 35mm equivalent of 88mm, but it's enough for a good walk-around lens. The wide-angle is effective and even if in some situations there is some barrel distortion the lens is recognized in Canon DPP which can remove it quickly and effectively. The image stabilizer is very valuable letting you take pictures without flash even in relatively dim room lighting. Of course for a slow shutter speed you will have movement blur if the subject moves, but for the most part the shutter speeds don't have to be 'too long' to get a decent picture. I've even taken pictures at faster shutter speeds without flash than the 'P'rogram mode will give you (i.e. manually select 1/60th instead of 1/15th) and they come out well, can be brightened up if needed and are fast enough to get an effective snapshot.
The zoom ring is fast and effective. It has little resistance but I've not noticed any zoom-creep since the lens is very light, yet another reason I like having it on the camera. I pair this lens with the Canon 55-250 IS and it's a great combo since both have the 4-stop Image Stablization.
Anyone with a Canon DSLR that isn't a full-frame equivalent would be well advised to get this lens. It's not expensive but it is very effective.
Update of the old EF-S 18-55mm kit lens April 10, 2008 This is the next generation kit lens for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel cameras. It features image stabilization and improved optics (e.g. adds an aspherical element). The autofocus sometimes has difficulties to focus in dark environments (indoors!), but that might be expected, as the lens is not too fast anyway. Otherwise, the AF is fast and precise. Also, image stabilization works well and allows you to take some amazing shots without a tripod. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a typical EF-S consumer lens, made with plastic and therefore small and very light weight. I only used it for a few weeks, but it seems to be solid enough and there is no wobble of the extension tube when zooming. This lens is definitely worth it's price and I can highly recommend it to other DSLR newbies!
Good-bye, original Kit Lens! April 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Too bad this isn't what came with my Canon XTi, but for just a tad over 200 clams I got one of the best, handiest lenses I have ever owned. It will be the one that I keep on my camera until I need more reach. With its little lenshood, it is just COOL! There's a photographic term for ya!
Great Lens! April 5, 2008 I bought this lens because I can't awlways hold my hand steady, and the IS has been a wonderful thing. I recently purchased another lens that does not have IS, and I can tell a big difference between the two. I think this is a great starter lens, and step up from the regular kit lens.
