Good lense for a beginner January 18, 2008 Its been almost a month since I bought the 40D along with this lense. It is a very user friendly and easy to understand lense. The pictures are crisp and it works well in low light and lesser phtography favourable conditions. It has a very generic configuration and can be used for all types of photography. However this lense is not a very good one to take extremely close shots and shooting big objects like aircrafts. You will definitely need additional lenses for fututre use.
18-55 IS Lens January 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this lens as an experiment when I bought my new Canon Digital camera. I have been using Canon SLR film cameras since 1979, and had a number of EOS lenses, but I had never used an Image Stabilizing lens.
I am very pleased with this lens for it's use as a general, snap shot, family lens. It produces extraordinarily sharp quick shots. I totally recommend it for this type of use.
Excellent Addition to the Canon Line January 8, 2008 I have a Rebel XT and sold my 18-55 kit lens to try the new IS version. The gamble was worth it. I sold my old one for $90 and bought the new one for roughly $175 at Amazon. The $85 difference is well worth the price. I don't have the steadiest hands and so the IS has really made a big big difference. I hate fuzzy/blurry pictures and this lens really has reduced the number of bad shots. Color is also impressive, particularly outdoors.
Picture quality is really good for the price. Michi (another reviewer) must have had a bad copy or an extraordinarily good copy of the non-IS version-- this lens, for the money rocks.
I also own the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens (a really fantastic lens). This Canon isn't as good, but for 1/2 the money, it is a bargain and holds its own fairly well.
My advice-- upgrade if you have the old and don't have the cash to upgrade to a higher class lens (like the Tamron I mentioned) and/or buy this lens instead of the non-IS version. If you can't find the Canon body you want bundled with this lens rather than the non-IS, then buy the camera body only and purchase this one seperately.
Far Better than the Kit Lens January 6, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought my Canon XTi Rebel with that horrible Kit Lens 18-55mm and regret it deeply. However, I decided to buy this new lens 18-55mm IS to see if there was any improvement and I am very much pleased with it. It is a cheap lens that will give the beginner a very good start in photography. It is stabilized and this feature worths every penny payed. It also delivers good image quality that a beginner would expect from a US$ 200.00 lens. If you are about to buy your first DSLR camera Rebel XTi, I recommend you to buy it with the Canon 18-55mm IS lens as a first kit lens. Please, forget the old 18-55mm NON IS lens what is a piece of ^&*#@ (you know what I mean, right?).
The new kit lens January 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have not used the old kit lens until recently. I purchased this lens with the XTI body. I am very happy with the lens. At least 2-3 stops of shutter speed improvement if you used the effective focal length recipocal calculation (i.e., the minimum shutter speed should be1/(the effective focal length). I can snap at the shutter speed 1/30 (hand held) at maximum focal length (55mm x 1.6 = 88mm). If you are planning to buy a new XT/XTi, you are definitely better off buying the body and this lens instead of the old kit lens combo. The difference of $100 or so is worth every penny and more.
If you already have an old kit lens, and like the focal range of this lens, the new IS kit lens will make you a very happy camper.
If you already have an old kit lens, and don't care much for this focal range, you may be better off saving for other lenses.
