Fills a void, and is fun . . . November 29, 2007 36 out of 42 found this review helpful
Though I'm no video expert, the Flip has been a fun transition into videography. The video quality could be better, but if you don't have a videocamera with you it doesn't matter how good the quality is. In my limited time since getting the Flip it has been incredibly convenient (not just to use but to download vidoes for e-mailing and uploading), reliable and easy to use. It's so small it's easy to carry anywhere, and to have it with you almost all the time. It's so easy to use there's no hesitance to take it out and start using for a quick video from some hike you're on or to record some story being told at Thanksgiving dinner. It's far better than nothing, and is a lot of fun to have around. You can move up to a different videocamera if you need, but I recommend the Flip as a starter and as a very convenient videocamera to have with you practically all the time.
Great camera for kids to use November 29, 2007 30 out of 33 found this review helpful
Just before Thanksgiving I bought a basic Flip & an Ultra, to learn about them, thinking I might give some as Christmas gifts. Soon as I started playing with them, my three sons (6, 8 & 10) scooped them up, and along with their visiting cousins (6 & 9) spent most of the day making incredibly interesting videos, some self-interviews, and some of each other playing together. It seemed like they needed zero instructions and somehow knew all they needed to know to make very compelling footage. Today I ordered seven more as gifts for various kids in my extended family. None to adults, thinking they can buy their own (!) but the kids are the ones who should have these cameras. No film costs, just dump the footage to a computer or DVD and go shoot some more. My sons share a bedroom, and I plan to make a little wall bracket for storing a single jointly-owned camera for them -- so it will always be available and accessible to them. They each have their own simple digital still cameras, but I'm sure they'll be fine sharing the Flip. And even if the Flips were somehow much cheaper, I like the idea of having them share just one. Makes it a kind of community device to be jointly valued and shared by the community. If I gave a Flip camera to my sister, she'd allow her kids to use it sometimes, but it'd get stuck in a drawer somewhere and die. And she has a son and a daughter (6&11). Probably have to give them each their own camera. A bit steep compared to what I'd usually spend for two nephews, but based on what I saw happening with the kids here at Thanksgiving, I think it'll be well worth it. -C.
Wow November 29, 2007 27 out of 31 found this review helpful
Wow -- who would've guessed that you can get good quality video from a lightweight little camcorder like this one. It's like they took everything that we hate about camcorders and fixed it.
1. Software: The software is simple and get this -- it resides on the camera. No awkward software to load onto and clog up your computer.
2. Simple: The software is simple and functional -- no loads of extra buttons and switches that you can't remember or never learn how to use.
3. No chords to lose: Just the little flip-out USB connector.
4. Batteries: Uses two AA batteries -- If you run out of charge, pop in two new ones -- no weighting for the battery to re-charge. Use Energizer lithiums and they will last next-to-forever.
5. No tapes or removable media: Records the video on a flash-USB drive for direct downloading into your computer-- too cool.
6. Lightweight and compact: It's so small and light that you just keep it your computer bag all the time without a thought -- so you'll have it with you when you need it and you're not looking for reasons to leave it behind.
Good, but beware Mac users November 28, 2007 18 out of 24 found this review helpful
I just got my camera in the mail, and at first I was very impressed. I still am impressed by the ease of recording and uploading videos, but I ran across quite a problem. I own a mac, and the software with the camera only allows videos to be saved in '.mov' format, which from what I have found thus far can't be played on Microsoft machines. I got this camera to send videos to my honey stationed in Iraq and he can't open them in this format. The camera software will not let you choose how you want videos to be saved. The other problem is I-movie doesn't recognize the saved clips as video and the software with the camera doesn't allow Mac users to save multiple video clips as one movie, so basically you're screwed when it comes to making little movies using multiple clips unless you go out and buy another program (I was looking into Quicktime pro--hopefully that will work out.)
In short, as a camera, it seems quite good. The software with it pretty much sucks, though.
Corrupt file system November 28, 2007 13 out of 39 found this review helpful
My unit arrived with a corrupt file system that would not load the required software to download the videos. Based on all of the positive reviews, I am going to exchange it and try one more time.
