5 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 6.0   September 16, 2008
This is a great product. Adds lots to my Photoshop CS. Wished I had waited a few more weeks to purchase so that I could have purchased version 7 instead.

4 out of 5 stars I'm (RAW) converted.   September 16, 2008
I had an unnatural aversion to Photoshop in the past, as it seemed to be a bit "snobbish", as in if you don't use PS you are an idiot. Well, maybe.

For almost 18 months, I have been using the state-of-the art (hah!) Pentax software that came with my camera. Although it is very clunky, and had a very frustrating interface with too much white space, I used it because it was free and did just about all I needed (not much), except dust-spotting. For that, I used now defunct (?) Firehand.com Ember, which is still my primary jpg viewer, though it was destructive.

After having read (again) the mostly good reviews for Elements, I downloaded the trial version. In the 10 minutes I looked at it, it appeared to be very nice, and had the "spot healing feature" which is what sold me (beyond the ability to process Pentax RAW files).

Now, I can adjust and process RAW into an image I can further modify or manipulate, level the horizon by simply drawing the horizon line, and clean up the dust spots non-destructively. And, it is a bit faster overall process, which is handy when you have 1,000 shots to process. You can do them in a batch with the same tweaks, or individually fine tune an image.

I do not use tags, so the Organizer side of things is of no interest to me. For others, it may be handy to find all your "flower" shots. Yo might have trouble importing them from earlier versions, though.

There are also some built-in methods for sharing pix (email, albums, etc), none of which appeal to me except possibly making basic slide shows, which seems simple enough.

As nearly everyone else mentions, the "quick start guide" really is only the very basics. Although there is on-line help and some normal program help, most people will want to get a book to go with the software. There were about 10 at my local store. I ended up with '...for Dummies' which is OK but not great.

It is easy to 'undo' changes you make, so many people can learn by experimenting with the features. If you already have editing software skills, it should be fairly straightforward.

Oh, I got V2.0 bundled with my scanner few years back, and I have been using that only for scanning. So, I sort of upgraded that in the process as well. I did have to update the Camera RAW plug-in to recognize the K20D files, though.

There are only a few minor drawbacks, such as the screen color which apparently can not be changed, but overall, I am happy with it. I feel like I am at least in the 20th century (sorry Pentax).

1 out of 5 stars Warning to Novice Users   September 16, 2008

I bought Photoshop Elements 4.0 after reading great reviews almost everywhere. I would not recommend this software to the novice. Elements is not intuitive and unless you know the nomenclature of photography software plan on spending hours with the manual and online doing the simplest task. The help system is not the greatest either. The creations module produces simple results. One could do better with Print Master Gold in a lot less time and effort. I don't doubt that Elements is a powerful program if your willing to put in the time to learn it. I wish someone had clued me in before I bought it and that is my purpose for writing this review. I don't plan to upgrade!!

The price of this product is good. ONe needs to be computer savvy to fully take advantage of this product. Although, with practice, you can fully master all the tiny computer symbols and their meanings.

3 out of 5 stars My first Amazon purchase   September 15, 2008

I recently purchased the Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 version. I was led to believe that I would receive a $20.00 rebate and I made the purchase because of this lower price. However, when I received my statement, I was informed that the rebate would only be valid if I was updating an earlier version. Since this was my first purchase from Amazon and any photoshop products, I couldn't get the rebate.
I won't be shopping with Amazon in the near future.
