5 out of 5 stars Excellent entry level DSLR   June 20, 2008

This camera is great, it takes wonderful pictures even if you have no clue how to use a DSLR. The camera has some great "AUTO" modes that take great pictures, but it also has manual exposure modes for more advanced photographers. A great camera for those wanting to make their first step into the DSLR world, I would recommend this camera over ANY of the other entry level DSLR cameras such as the D60, D40x, or Canon Rebel XTI. Also, 6.1 megapixels is PLENTY for making quality images...so don't be turned off by the fact that many of the other entry level DSLRs have 8 or 10 megapixels crammed into their sensors.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Nikon fanatic, Now even more   June 19, 2008

I have a Nikon FE2 and enjoyed it for many many years, This D40 is a miracle, you don't have to go further. Just enjoy and make wonderful pictures. As easy as a pocket one, and as complex and fully featured as the best. I've also used my old nikkor lenses f1.4 50mm and zoom 35-105. It's a permanent challenge to make better picture with my photo knowledges, and artist sidein P, A, S or M, than AUTO mode. I can configure my D40 as my old camera or plenty of new functionalities and indicators.
If you love to make photos participating a little more, then D40 is your partner.
Exccellent product, happy for my decision. Buying experience could not be better, excellent, precise, informed, unbeatable.

5 out of 5 stars The end is near for "compact" digital cameras.....   June 18, 2008

Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-135mm Nikkor Zoom Lens.
For $660 it's hard to beat the photo quality of the camera, and the range of the zoom lens. In dSLR usage, the lens is 27-202mm (1.5x focal factor), very wide to medium telephoto. The camera is insanely fast and very easy to use, and with a lens like this, you don't need to carry another lens around.
Thank you Nikon.

3 out of 5 stars Everything is good but the shutter error   June 16, 2008

I had this camera for a few months. Everything is good until the error message "Error, press the button to release the shutter again" appears every time I take a picture. I have to push the button at least three times to take one picture now. Sometimes even worse: the error message just keeps coming and I can never take one in some mode. The problem made me missed a lot of good shots. Since this error message is included in the list of errors on the manual, I guess Nikon is aware of this problem but did not get a chance to fix it?

I would have loved this camera a lot if it does not have such problem.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!   June 16, 2008

I decided to make the transition to DSLRs and this camera was definitely a good decision. For a college student, the price was definitely within budget as well. It is easy to use and very light weight. The photos come out clear and crisp, and the 55-200mm lens is amazing!

Ever since its arrival, I haven't been able to put the camera down!
