4 out of 5 stars Great software - if you have the horsepower   February 9, 2008

I had Studio 9 prior to purchasing 11. 9 was somewhat shaky, and when I bought 11 I had some problems until I loaded up my PC with an extra GB of RAM. I am running 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM, and I have had no problems since.

The features are great, I find it easy to use, the manual is actually somewhat helpful, and it makes great videos.

They definitely hit you up for extras on transitions and the like, but the stuff that comes with it is pretty good.

Two gripes:

- Do not use Pinnacle to burn your DVDs, as it takes forever. Create a disc image, then use Nero or some other program to burn the disc.

- It limits your DVD length to about 60 minutes, even though I am creating the image on my hard drive and it takes up less space than Studio thinks it will.

A tip - If making a long DVD, split it into several small projects of 5-10 minutes each, then create .avi files of them and put them together in the final project of full length. This will greatly improve the time it takes to save projects and burn the image.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect but great software for the price   January 31, 2008

I have used Studio 11 since it was available, I have no problem with it and have produced some great looking DVDs and slide shows. I have also tried Adobe Premiere which I thought was more difficult to learn and not as intuitive as Studio. However, with this program, like all other high end video editing programs, a fast computer is necessary. I maxed my RAM out to 4 GB ( I would like to have 8 GB for my next computer). I used a 500 GB dedicated hard drive and if I decided to edit HD, I would have to buy, at least, a 1 TB drive. If you have a computer cost less than a thousand dollars, Studio 11 probably will not work well for you. Pinnacle Studio 11 is by no means perfect and it does have some quirts, but is a good value for what you pay.

I had a fight with Amazon about this product because I felt their advertisement of a $30 rebate was misleading. Only after drilling down subsequent to the purchase of the product did I find that the rebate was conditional upon a "qualifying upgrade from competitive products or previous versions of Studio". To their credit, Amazon issued me a $30 credit but I'll bet it's still listed that way, (VERIFIED). Be aware that the rebate is not a mail-in rebate - it has contingencies. That being said, the rebate form does not insist upon "proof" of qualifying ownership - if you're willing to lie you probably will get the rebate but I don't like that.

As far as the product, it performs flawlessly for me on my Q6600 Intel cpu and Asus P5B motherboard. I'm not sure why so many people say such bad things about it but I think it does a great job for a piddling price when there are competitive products selling upwards of $500.

Don't expect the product to take proper advantage of multi-core cpu's - it is not optimized for multi-thread. That's what your $500 would buy you. I'm finding render times of a little better than real-time with the cpu oc'd to 2.9ghz. Video editing is fun and this is a good entry product.

5 out of 5 stars Studio has been very, very good to me.   January 23, 2008
I've been using Pinnacle Systems Studio since version 7. The earlier versions, 7 and 8, were not very mature but then neither was the need, that is, they seemed to fill the need at the time for me. They were not as stable as later versions. But I made great videos and all my friends would ask me how I created such masterpieces. (Well, maybe not masterpieces, but they were better than any of my friends could make including many in the Mac community!)

Studio 9 was the first to breakthrough some of the rougher areas and, more than ever, the product meet my need and expectations.

Studio 10 was even better, and then version 11 was a really, really great advancement. Stability and capability has improved but, as I said, I didn't have too much difficulty with earlier versions as others have mentioned. But the effects in 11 Ultimate and the quick rendering, the improved interface, everything has been great!

I didn't even consider a Macbook Pro because I didn't think that Studio would run on it. (I now know that it will work using virtualization utilities.) So my newest notebook is a high-end Dell.

I don't know what to say to all the people who posted bad reviews about Studio 11. I would and have and will continue to recommend Studio 11 to my colleagues and friends.

Installation was, at times, difficult to understand. There is an order to installing all the media that comes with Studio 11. And then there are updates including some 3rd party updates. In fact, when I got my new notebook, I had to reinstall the OS 3 times before getting it the way I wanted. (There was a problem with a codec.) The reinstalls had nothing to do with Studio 11 but it gave me 3 opportunities to install it on my new Dell notebook computer. By the 3rd time it was a piece of cake.

Anyway, I'm not saying that it never crashes. But even when it does, it saves everything and picks up where it left off, or I can start with a new project. Once you know the interface you can really put together videos fast. I admit that I use it more for rendering stills into video (with great effects!) than I use it for video, but that's only because that's what I like to do: stills. It works great for video and it is easy and fast whenever I use it for video.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to edit video (or create video from stills) with great effects.

Oh, and I do have experience and own several other video editing products. The only other one that I keep around and use more than Studio is Womble MPEG Video Wizard. There is another one that I would recommend but I have only used the eval version so, well, I guess this review is long enough.

Enjoy!

Try the product before you buy it. Oh yeah, that's right -- they don't offer a trial version. Ask yourself why. Every other comparable product is offered as a trial version.

My experience with this product, and the support behind it, was HORRIBLE and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
