Great editor, but..... February 21, 2008 I would have given Studio 11 Ultimate five stars except for its instability in rendering AVCHD videos; it keeps hanging during the render process. Furthermore, there is an occasional video/voice sync problem. Pinnacle support is good in responding to help questions depending upon the agent's competence. Unfortunately, they couldn't solve the AVCHD problem even though my XP SP2 PC far exceeds Studio 11's requirements. Because the editor has many great features and is very intuitive and easy to use, I didn't want to give up on it. I finally figured out a work-around that seems to work great (so far). It's a two-step process: [1] render each unaltered project video scene to a hi-def mpeg-2 file [2] assemble these mpeg-2 files into your project and then do your normal editing. It's very important that you NOT first alter (edit) the AVCHD files for step [1]; render them exactly as they came out of the camcorder. Editing with mpeg-2 files is quite stable and rendering is about 3-4 times faster compared to working with AVCHD files. A further note: some of the transitions do not work with ATI Radeon cards; use an nVidia GeForce card instead.
Even if Pinnacle does finally fix the AVCHD problem, I would still convert the scenes to mpeg-2 because rendering is so much faster that way.
Studio 11 Upgraders Beware February 20, 2008 Existing Studio users be very careful! I bought this as an upgrade to my version 9 software. However on installing it didn't work with existing Smartcapture files and on searching all over the place I found a one liner on the read me file saying Smartcapture is not supported. However this is not mentioned anywhere else, no mention at all of this in the whole manual, on the help or their web site - just try searching with Smartcapture and see what you get! Given that Smartcapture was one of their major sales features to remove ALL backward compatability in this way is unbelievable. If you have no files captured in Smartcapture it doesn't matter particularly but if like me you have 70+ video files from the last 25 years, all captured, split into sections and documented using Smartcapture then this is a real problem. Firstly they should make this clear in the marketing material so you don't waste your money on an upgrade like I did, secondly surely something as fundamental as this should be clear in the online help and in the manual. Then to make it worse I contacted Pinnacle support who wasted hours of my time with failed implementation instructions of different types (the product didn't work properly apart from the Smartcapture issue) until the technician, after another specific query on Smartcapture replied that he had just found out it wasn't supported. But my original mail asked this question and the first response was it is fixed in the 11.1.1 patch. I don't think he even read my original support request and just assumed that any problems would be fixed in the patch.
Studio 11 Ultimate February 16, 2008 There are less problems in this package than in previous releases. The program still quits on occasion but not as often as the previous versions. It is still the easiest video editing program to use. You have to remember to do things in a specific order, ie, do not add music until end. I haven't tried to download HD yet so cannot comment about that at this time. Transitions are smooth, but was unable to unlock the free transitions. When I try, it hangs up the program. Haven't called customer service about that yet. They still haven't got all the kinks out but compared to 8 and 9, it is much better.
Studio 11 best release yet but still buggy February 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been a Studio user for years ~ since release 8. Always been easy to use and has also always been "buggy" e.g. would crash out of the blue, sometimes just do weird things like not being able to import video that you could import before, etc. The latest release seems to be the most stable yet ~ I've been using the program for about a month now. One weird thing that started happening is that when I go to the "Make Movie" tab and select a file type to output the file as like AVI, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, etc, there are now 2 listings for each file type, and choosing the wrong listing will make the program lock up. I called technical support and they were apparently unaware of the problem. I then went to their support forum and did some research ~ it seems this is a well documented issue among Studio users as far back as August 2007! I emailed Pinnacle telling them this and haven't gotten a resposnse in 2 weeks.
To be fair, I completely reformatted my system (Intel Core II due, 2 GB RAM, 3 SATA drives and 1 IDE drive with Windows XP SP2) and reinstalled everything and so far, Studio seems to be working fine.
So, the product is pretty good if you can work around the quirks and deal with average to poor technical support. By reading the forums, it just seems like everyone likes the program, learns the bugs and also learns how to deal with them. Good Luck!
Pain in the But!!!!!!!!!! February 10, 2008 If you want an easy program to install, Studio plus11 & upgrade to Ultimate which I bought. Take some headache meds before handing this program. SoundSoap is such a pain to install, it has taken me 8 hours to try and figure out the authorized their stupid plug. Why can't they just say hear enjoy! No make us unstall & reinstall. But when you open plus 11, your not shure where the plugins are, and how to open Sounsoap? I bought this for the film and lighting effects. If I knew It would be such a pain I would have ever have bought it.. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
