3 out of 5 stars Better WAIT   July 3, 2007
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

Like all new programs, the beta bugs are not all exterminated!!
The work space has a different look simply by changing the colour bar on the timeline.
The Pro DAD effects are quite good but it is easy to overwhelm the program and it can freezzze quite easily which is very frustrating, I have seen on the Pinnacle forum site some issues with burning , I have had 1 disk that failed but I could not see why.
I think the transitions and effects in prodad and ease of use make this a program that is worth having, but I will look forward to the "fix Patches" which must surely come.

1 out of 5 stars Pinnacle Installition Nightmare   June 29, 2007

I have been installing software since Radio Shack model 1 days and this was the most frustrating experience I have ever had. I have been using Studio since at least version 7.
First Pinnacle provided absolute no installation instructions. I was installing to a brand new PC with VISTA Home Premium. The Pinnacle Studio 11 Plus seemed to install just fine, but the second disk "Studio Ultimate" seemed to stop. After waiting several hours because the installation window said "Wait while your software is configured", I finally realized the next window I should be able see was actually hidden behind the front window.
The installation continued that way, each window coming up behind all the other windows. This may be a VISTA bug, but it has not happened on any of the other software I have installed since.

When I questioned Support what I got with this "Ultimate" disk, and how do I know if they load correctly, the response was SoundSoap * Moving Picture * VitaScene. I got no indication of how to find them. Using the program help system gave me some indication of what "Moving Pictures" is, there is no information on the other two. They don't show in "Task Manager" either. I may nerve know where they are or if they even loaded.

3rd disk "Studio Bonus" boy that sounds great, later I found out this is nothing but a bunch extra stuff you can shell out more bucks for. During the installation of this 3rd disk, after I continued to move windows around to see what was behind, I ran across the window to install this mysterious "Sound Soap". Well I had 3 option, who knows which is correct.
Boy just a few words of instructions would have been nice. I tried one, it was a trial version, the next was a buy option at $396. Well the third was the correct since it ask for a serial number. So I got to the 3rd disk sleeve, no serial number to be found. Then I noticed it over on the 2nd sleeve. I had so much trouble getting out of the trial version installation that I still don't know if I got a trial version, a real version or any version.
The "VitaScene", what ever that is, is a mystery too. don't show up in help and support continue to ignore my request for help in location it.

My recommendation is get version 10, It worked great and did not have any second party mystery addons.

4 out of 5 stars What I needed for HD   June 22, 2007

"I purchased this program because I wanted to be able to burn HD DVD's from standard DVD's to play on my Toshiba A2 HD DVD player. After a rather fast install (just annoying having to install the Ultimate features from a separate disc), I got up and running pretty fast and imported footage from my Canon HDV camcorder (the excellent HV20). I was familiar with products like Premiere Elements and really found Studio to be much easier. I tried a few of the Ultimate pro special film effects from the Pro Dad Vitascene tool, this is a goldmine, so I'll surely spend more time on these! I combined video and animated photos into a movie quickly. Then I got onto my HD DVD menu creation quite easily, you even can see immediately if your movie will fit on a standard disc. It takes a bit of time to burn the disc, but the result on my 46" LCD were just gorgeous. So all in all, a good first experience with Studio Ultimate, of course you need some horsepower to get HD running smoothly, but it works."

4 out of 5 stars First Impressions   June 21, 2007

I have logged a lot of time with previous versions 8 and 10. Simply stated, early version 10 earned a bad reputation. The latest update, version 10.7 was much improved if not flawless (neither was the competitive product I tried). Nonetheless, I like this program and find it so easy to use, so I was hopeful that in addition to the benefit of some new features, Studio 11 would continue this trend of improvement. Here's what I've found so far.

As instructed, I uninstalled version 10 before loading the 3 disks set. The program installed with no problems. My current project involves std def DV-AVI files totaling over 25GB of source material on an external drive, which seems like a reasonably demanding test. At this point, I have used the program for 12+ hrs in edit mode with no problems. I have also rendered an AVI from the compilation (very fast BTW) and burned a DVD. Both tasks ran smoothly.

Check the system requirements against your system configuration carefully if working with HD and particularly AVCHD. Note also that proDAD's Vitascene plug-in (incl) will demand a high end graphics card and dedicated video RAM. Fancy comes at a price - you're demanding a lot from your system hardware if you're playing with HD or using the proDAD plug-ins.

I set my preferences to hide the premium content. "Premium content" consists of a wide range of additional transitions, effects, filters, etc that are available at an additional charge. A good number of transitions and filters are included in the default install, and just how many transitions do you really need, anyway? But if you see something tailor made for your particular project, go get it. Fair enough.

Users of previous versions will find the user interface very familiar. New users should find it intuitive and the clean workspace should ease the learning curve. For example, buttons, functions and a window applicable to editing a video clip appear when you need them (in the clip edit mode) but don't clutter the workspace otherwise. Pinnacle includes a storyboard viewing option which I find beneficial when rearranging the clip order. Users who include a lot of still images will find this mode a bonus. Editing in the timeline mode is simple, everything works as you'd expect; cut and paste, drag and drop, multiple selects. Finally, creating DVD menus and markers is integrated into the timeline making that final production step very easy.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good....   June 20, 2007

I've been a user of Pinnacle since Studio 8. I've used 9.3.4 for over a year with great results. I didn't upgrade to Studio 10 because of all the bad reviews, but I took a chance with 11 Ultimate and I haven't been disapointed. Within the first install, I immediately rendered about 20 MPEG2 clips, both with and without effects, and there was no hitch at all. I have burned several DVD's with no crashes. The program has not crashed on me yet, which is a great step forward for Pinnacle. There are bound to be hitches with video editing software. I've used almost all of them and Pinnacle is the easiest to learn and use, in my opinion, which is why I took a chance with Studio 11. Granted, I'm not using this for HD editing, so that isn't important to me. If it is to you, the recent 11.1 upgrade may help you. I rated it only 4 stars because I still don't quite trust Pinnacle yet, but if Studio 11 keeps performing for me, I may have to change that. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this product.
