Good Product, But You'll Need New Hardware for Analog January 9, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a rewrite of a previous review where I gave Studio 11 only one star, a stark contrast with my five-star ratings for Studio 9 and 10. The reason for my low rating: Studio 11, unlike 9 and 10, did not capture analog VHS with audio and video in sync. The audio was nearly a full second (2/3 to be exact) behind the video. I've since solved that problem, about which more later. Otherwise, this product works very well, better in fact than previous versions. Rendering is significantly faster than version 10, and light years faster than version 9. I've also had none of the instability problems that plagued version 10 before the 10.5 free upgrade. I'm very satisfied with Studio 11 now. The "now" is because of that audio-video sync problem. After going through all the grief I did, with a week's worth of e-mails back and forth (and I have to say Pinnacle's response time was much better and more exhaustive than other companies I've dealt with), troubleshooting and reinstalls, the problem was the Studio AV/DV capture board that came with Studio 9 and I was still using. When I replaced it with a Pinnacle MovieBoard Plus, the problem went away. Studio 11 is now perfectly in sync on analog capture. I highly recommend you get the MovieBoard Plus if you're going to do any analog capture with Studio 11. HOWEVER -- Studio's web site specifically listed the AV/DV board as hardware that worked with all versions of Studio 11. Had it not done so, I would have investigated further and probably bought the MovieBoard with Studio 11, thereby saving all that troubleshooting, e-mail writing, reinstalling and general frustration. I only looked at the AV/DV board because of a suggestion by a Pinnacle employee who frequently answers problems raised in Amazon reviews. After all, the web site said that board worked with Studio 11, so why would I even think about it being the problem? That's the reason for my four star rating, even though the product itself is worthy of five stars. I can't give five stars to a company whose website has incorrect information that should have been checked beforehand. I am not a beta tester and have no desire to be one, which is why I'm penalizing this product one star.
Bad Company to Try to Work with January 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My order was srewwed up from the begining. The people were rude and gave out a real don't care attitude I wouldn't care if their software was the best in the world. I don't work with jerks. You should try all their customer help forms They fail or time out before any one could answer. Then they give you their answers and if you don't choose one you get an error and a timed out. I have never seen such a messed up company. C S Walters
Really good stuff January 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product really meets my needs. We put together videos for church and youth groups with this software. We had to upgrade the computer we were using. You do have to buy some extras if you want to use them rain snow, etc effects. But to include all the effects would have put this out of most peoples price range. I suggest you buy the book or get the video lessons from Amazon they will help out lots. The only thing I whish this software did was convert MSDVD files to MPG.
Absolute Garbage! Crashes Constantly. Takes 2 Hours to Install! December 30, 2007 I have been a Studio user since version 7. I abandoned it for Cyberlink's Power Director which is not nearly as "cool" with fancy Transitions and Title Editing, but it is somewhat Stable! I have been in the Video Editing game since analog Tape-to-Tape with a Take-Bar and I would have figured that Digital would have made it easier. Wrong!
Pinnacle should be embarassed! It literally takes 2 hours to install.. then you Register multimple times and then you find out (in between Crashes) that you get "a Sales Pitch" to unlock about 80% of the features. Are you kidding!!? I spent $120 for Ultimate and I have to BUY MORE? My old Hollywood FX Plug-ins no longer work. Customer Support is horrible (that is IF you have a half a day to devote to being on Hold). Bottom line: Don't expect any Software to work 100% for this application, but Cyberlink, Adobe and Sony are much better choices. I would give them ZERO Stars if I could! They owe me $120 and about 30 hours of my life back!!
Solid performance, poor customer support December 27, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I tried Studio previously with version 9 and was completely turned off by the software. Although it promised much, it was awkward, unstable, and incredibly slow. Making a DVD of a small home video could take hours, even half a day and still end up with a non-functioning disk.
But I recently had my employer spring for a copy of Studio 11 Ultimate on my new office computer and over all I am pleased with that decision. Ultimate promises lots of features from Greenscreening to Picture in Picture to fancy "Hollywood" effects, and pretty much delivers on it. The interface takes a little practice, but the results are quickly rendered and very rewarding. (I went from raw 30 minutes of video to finished product with custom DVD menus in less than 2 hours including editing work, rendering, and buring.)
And I was particularly surprised with the straight-to-DVD software included in 11 Ultimate -- throw a 60 VHS tape into the player, and a very nice DVD gets spit out in less than 75 minutes!
I have had some problems with validating some of the plug-ins and have not been able to get StageTools' MovingPicture to work correctly, in part because of Pinnacle's ridiculous excuse for "customer service." They have phone support which costs you money and "chat" support that never, ever connects with you, and email support that seems to do little other than generate random "solutions" without regard for the details of your problem. (Eventually, they come through though. . .)
All in all, I do strongly recommend Studio 11 Ultimate. It isn't perfect, but it is powerful and reasonably fast.
