Works well for HD DVD February 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this for the simple purpose of editing HDV to make HD DVD's burned on regular DVD's. It does this very well, no problems whatsoever. When I tried the free trial version it would not capture HDV from my Canon HV20 camera. I went ahead and bought because I found another program to capture video. I updated the program from the web site, and found that HDV capture works fine. Being a newbie to editing, I have been able to negotiate around the program pretty well.
Update: The program continues to work fine on 2 ghz 2 gb ram 2 Core Duo laptop, no crashes whatsoever.
A fine nuance that is not well explained in the manual is how to burn a disc so that the video looks as good as the original HDV. After you've fiddled around with your video clips, rather than go straight to the burning process, you always want to "share" (create) a video file FIRST, with exactly the same project properties as your original video clips. Only after this, do you want to burn this new video file as an HD DVD. The program seems to offer up the possibility of going straight from editing to burning, but this always results in some redundant re-encoding, and the video quality suffers.
An HD DVD should contain perfect copy of your HDV recording (unless there are a few capturing glitches), no re-encoding except for what you add to the video.
A lot of problems with crashes, can be attributed not to the program but to minor faults with the captured video. Make sure the captured video files are clean-- if the load up and play promptly with windows media player, they are probably good files. Sometimes a capture file plays fine but has a small problem in a particular spot, which will then ruin the project from that point on. Edit out the problem spot, project will then work fine.
A very active users' forum, with active involvement of moderators, act as pretty good technical support for this product. I got responses (and a mild scolding) within hours from this users' forum.
Powerful February 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my first time getting semi-serious with video editing. Working on backing up and editing all my old homemade vhs tapes in to dvd format. Very powerful program. Lots of choices for special effects, menu's, templates, etc, with even more free stuff available from Ulead once you install the product. Instruction book that comes with it is pretty good, though sometimes a bit vague with the details, but at least it's an actual book you can hold in your hand! Not just a text file you have to download or some nonsense. There is a ton of information available on their forums, though imo there is TOO much stuff. No way would anyone be able to actually find an answer in the thousands of posts on their boards. Not sure about cust. support, etc, since I haven't had to use it yet. Good price, plus a $[...] rebate when I bought it, not bad! It's crashed a few times on me, though my system is pretty up-to-date and solid. I recommend saving regularly as you work on projects, just in case. All in all......an intuitive, not too-easy-not-too-hard product that will get the job done for most beginner to intermediate videomaniacs.
It's a coin flip - good product February 11, 2008 After several years of struggling with ROXIO and using all of there work-arounds I finally decided to test some other products. I downloaded the test version of Corel and everything seemed to work. Of course this was just the test version.
I purchased the full blown version and now I am very pleased. Everything works as expected and the speed is far superior to ROXIO. My only grip is the lack of functionality when it comes to creating a DVD menu. You can not align text. You can not hide some of the objects and customization is very limited. However, this is a minor issue compared to ALL the problems ROXIO had.
What I've come to realize is that it's a coin flip. It all depends on your computer and how things are set up. There is no single (affordable) video editing software that would make everyone happy. You must test these products before purchasing and make sure to read the specs!
I found Corel VSP 11 Plus to be rather stable on my system and I'm very pleased so far. My specs are: Biostar 6100 T-series mother board (socket 939), AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor, ATI 256meg Graphics Card, 160 gig internal HD (WD) SATA, 2 gigs of memory, 1 DVD Lightscribe burner, 1 DVD/CD reader and I'm only running Win XP. I will not load any other Microsoft products because it has a tendancy to screw things up.
Good luck and make sure to test the products before purchasing. If the company won't let you test it, then it's not work purchasing. Also, make sure there is good support and/or a good user forum for questions. The one thing ROXIO did have was a good user forum but so does Corel.

If you want to make a Looping DVD for a trade show, this is it very easy. Tried at least 4 or 5 other methods. This one does it
Best Version Yet January 31, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've owned Video Studio 7, 9, and now 11. I love 11. Its a easy to use in all facets. I'm not sure if it has a tutorial like its predecessors because now that I've progressed from 7 to 9 to 11, I haven't needed it. I love the layout and how simple it is to put together a movie. More importantly are the enhancements: You can have up to 6 layers of video/pictures on screen at one time. Very cool! You can also now adjust the fading out of music for any length of time you'd like. You can easily cut video and music with ease.
Two things that I have found that I don't care for are when you delete a segment of video, sometimes it will delete the music layer with it. Also, when you add pictures or video from a file on your computer, with each file you add and go back to add another, it won't take you right back to the previous folder you were in. Small things, but annoying none the less. Definitely not annoying enough to not buy this product. I think this version of Video Studio is unbelievable. I absolutely love it for what I do, which is create 45 minute movies on my kids each year (highlights of the past year at each birthday). Tons of fun!
