A Solid High Megapixel Camera for Great Archival Photos October 18, 2007 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
I've used the Sony DSC-H7 for a couple of weeks now and I've gotten a good sense of the strengths and weaknesses of this camera. Overall a strong recommendation and only a few minor flaws.
Here's the breakdown:
PROS:
- Incredibly high quality 8 megapixel photos - Serious 15x optical zoom (not pixelated digital zoom) - Takes pictures in very quick in rapid succession, 3 per second if desired - In camera picture editing including red-eye reduction - Extremely solid physical construction overall (one exception below) - Powerful flash that lights up even far away targets - Long battery life (200+ shots in my tests with still half power left) - Has high-quality Sony add-ons for wide angle and telephoto lenses
CONS:
- Screw on light baffle (included) seems cheap and doesn't stay in position and can ruin shots - Automatic settings mode can lead to blurry photos in action sequences unlike other Cybershots - Face recognition mode doesn't seem to work more than 8 feet away or so - Long battery charging time if you use more than a quarter of the charge. - Smallish rear LCD screen makes checking photos more difficult than it should be, expected larger in a camera like this - Flash pops up and is auto-activated more than any other camera I've used before and more than seems needed
Overall a really solid performer and happy with it, you just have to get used to its personality, it's definitely not a grab and go as the thin Cybershots, but with a tiny bit of study you can produce pretty amazing results.
Thanks Amazon for the Amazing Camera October 4, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
DSCH7 camera is a very good value for money. I am loving its remote... now no more 10 seconds timer hassel. Its light weight and takes great shots. Amazon has delievered it really fast. Thanks much once again Amazon.
Nice camera, VERY proprietary hardware September 27, 2007 24 out of 28 found this review helpful
An excellent camera, functions essentially as I hoped. Video quality is very high. I have two concerns about the proprietary nature of this camera:
1. The USB cable is difficult to plug in to the camera and is of a type I have never seen before (it is either very obscure or proprietary). Which means if you don't have the cable with you, you aren't transferring any pictures.
2. The battery pack is proprietary and expensive! I have no idea why Sony decided to move away from AA batteries (which are cheap and available everywhere) to a proprietary battery pack (which is expensive and difficult to obtain). The previous incarnation of this model used AA batteries and suffered no decreased battery life. If you are out and about with a dead battery and haven't purchased a $50 backup battery pack, you are out of luck.
As I mentioned, netiher of these changes to this model improve it in any way, they only decrease it's usefulness. Other manufacturers still utilize mini USB connectors and AA batteries which makes them more user friendly.
The only reason I can imagine for these changes is so Sony can make extra cash selling accessories. Didn't they learn their lesson with Beta Max?
Not a wonderful camera September 7, 2007 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought this camera 4 days ago. It does not take steady pictures when you change it to "SCN" mode or "Twilight" mode. You have to use "Auto" Mode to get steady pictures in low light. But then by using "Auto" mode, the background in the dark does not come good. So whats the use of having SCN and Twilight mode when it can not take steady pictures. The camera claims to take "Super Steady Shots" But it does not do that when you are trying to take a Landscape/portrait picture in dark. All the pictures come blurred. Instruction manual recommends to use a tripod using these modes.
I called Sony custormer service. The call support center was located in Phillipines. So there were communication problems. I had to repeat my concern at least 5 times to the agent for her to understand and still I did not get a satisfactory answer.
I believe this is a common problem with all cameras. My 4 year old digital camera has the same problem, so I thought if I am purchasing a sony camera after 4 years, image blurring in the dark would have been resolved with technology advancement, because sony claims DSCH7B to be a "Super Steady" camera. Unfortunately, it is not. I felt that my old Fuji S5200 still takes better pictures that DSCH7B.
Camera is supposed to be HD, but resolution of the pictures that I tried to display on HDTV were not HD Quality.
I would recommend FUJI S7000( which is an enhanced version of S5200 that I have) over this camera. It has almost same features as this camera, takes excellent pictures, and is almost 1/2 the price.
Beautiful shots! September 6, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Easy to use, excellent pictures, my first non-Olympus camera! The zoom is great and the speed is a real improvement over my old camera. Perfect for a beginner or experienced alike.
