Great paired with SanDisk 8GB CF Card August 13, 2008 Does exactly what it's supposed to. My laptop only has FireWire 400 so don't know how much faster it would be on a FW800 but on FW400 it imports a full 8GB Extreme III card into Lightroom in about 5 minutes, RAW 15MB files.
As Fast As It Says July 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I plug this into my FireWire 800 port and download from a SanDisk Extreme IV CF card, it fires through 4G in about 2 minutes or less. Amazing.
I'm going to eventually buy another one to take with me to use with my laptop.
Very fast image transfers July 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CF reader is well worth the money if you pair it with SanDisk's Extreme IV CF cards. How fast is it? I shot 139 RAW images on my Canon 20D onto an 4GB SanDisk Extreme IV CF card. The images average 8 MB per file for a total of 1.04 GB. I used this Extreme Firewire CF reader connected to a 1394a port on a desktop PC running Windows Vista. The card reader took just 42 seconds using Adobe Bridge to load the images. That is a transfer rate of 26.7 MB/sec. That is more than 2X faster than using the SanDisk Ultra II cards or using the Extreme IV card on my USB CF reader. The load was so fast, I could barely make out the thumbnail images as they flashed by in the Adobe Bridge loader pop-up dialog. By the way, installation was a snap. I just plugged it in and it was ready to go. I'm very happy with this purchase. Highly recommended.
A faster reader for compact flash cards July 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This SanDisk firewire reader offers a definite speed improvement over standard USB 2.0 readers. For example, writing to uDMA compact flash cards occurs at a rate of 14 megabytes/second and reading occurs at a rate of 25 megabytes/second. Writing to non-uDMA compact flash cards occurs at a rate of 10 megabytes/second and reading occurs at a rate of 13 megabytes/second. In contrast, my USB 2.0 reader can write to or read from either uDMA or non-uDMA compact flash cards at a rate of 5 megabytes/second. These speed improvements are well worth the price of this firewire reader.
Good product, but not as fast as I thought June 16, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I wish there was an option to give this 3.5/5 stars, but there's not so I gave it 4.
The product works well, and connects just fine to Firewire 800. I have had no issues with it and its definitely made downloading 100s of 8MP photos very easy and fast for me. PROS - Super fast downloads - Easy to use, corrects to FireWire 800. - Small footprint.
CONS - Expensive vs. the actual performance increase. I guess I was expecting faster downloads vs. USB 2.0, but I guess just looking at the bandwidth you kind of expect this thing to not blow USB 2.0 devices out of the water. - Only compact flash, no other devices. - If you daisy chain this to another FireWire 800 device and are doing read/write to it, bandwidth (speed) is decreased.
Nonetheless, if you want a speed increase, this will do it, but you will pay a little more for it. Highly recommended if you are willing to spend a little extra crash for it.
