5 out of 5 stars I read the hoopla - now I own the thaiwan version   October 19, 2006

Awesome is the only word I use to describe the exhilaration of a super fun experiance. After reading all the reviews I could find I ordered one from Cameta Camera direct to make sure it was in stock. I quoted the price on Amazon at the time (Friday the 13th)to the Cameta salesman. $899.00 I forgot to ask if it was from Thaiwan. It arrived in five days! It was from Thaiwan! uhg. I had just thrown out my back on Monday but that didn't stop me from trying it out an hour before sunset. Awesome. Absolutely worked flawlessly. Pictures were sharp and clean, great exposure on a D-50. Don't wait; the price went up twice since I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lens - Poor Service   October 19, 2006

This is a very nice lens for walking around and street photography.
I strongly suggest this lens to anyone wants a good all round lens.
It is not a prime lens but pretty close. Buy one from a local supplier.

I had mine on order from Amazon since 06/06 and they never were able to deliver it.
To many promises and none were ever met. Even after talking to a Amazon CS mgr to confirm one delivery. I was assured it was coming in October, needless to say it never happened. I just wanted a honest answer.

I canceled my order today with Amazon and happy to do so.
I will never purchase a item from Amazon again, to many other honest places on line that want my business.

5 out of 5 stars Unfair reviews   October 14, 2006

I've got to say I'm sorry to say that a few reviewers are giving this incredible lens a low rating because they are angry at Amazon and/or the fact that this lens is so hard to find. Luckily, I do have this lens, and I adore it. Another reviewer stated, "Having used it during interviews, I found an amount of distortion at short focal lengths that is simply unacceptable - heads like easter eggs." Well, somebody doesn't know much about photography. Time to study a bit about photography and use the recommended 85-120 (in 35mm)for portraits. If he's experiencing this kind of distortion in group shots, it would be the people on the outer edges of the picture. It's a trait of all wide angle lenses. Generally, the wider you go, the more distortion on the edges.

Basically, the reason I wanted to write this review is to counter-balance the reviewers that rated this lens poorly because they couldn't get their hands on it or they didn't know how to use it. This lens is very hard to get ahold of because it is an incredible piece of engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Alternate Sources   October 14, 2006

I see a lot of "reviews" here that are complaining about how Amazon is treating their customers with respect to this item.

I placed my order back in June, and last Friday my order was canceled due to the projected availability going out into 2007.

A week later I see that Amazon is using another vendor to source these lenses; in effect they're giving an alternative source - trying to provide a service in my mind to you the customer.

Note that the other vendor sets the price of the item and not Amazon. There are vendors out there asking $2K for this same item?!?

I recognized this vendor because I spent about 15 hours on eBay last week after my order was canceled. Having lost several auctions I thought very hard about purchasing from this vendor through Buy Now listings in eBay.

I was lucky enough to finally win an auction at 4AM - I paid somewhere in between 799 and 949 - I probably could have gotten it less if hadn't been for another night owl - damn them!

The guy I got my lens from had been through a similar situation; unlike myself, and all the others complaining here, he'd placed orders with several vendors and three came in at once. He'd been waiting 7 months for his lens at this point.

If you want something, and this is a case of want and not need...

...quit complaining - there are alternatives - go find them!

And for those that are a little confused by this price hike - if you're in the queue with a purchase from Amazon you will pay the Amazon price - not the price quoted by the alternate vendor - you're just going to have to wait.

1 out of 5 stars Not Received Yet   October 14, 2006

I ordered this lens from Amazon in August for $756. Delivery estimate has been changed several times with the latest being late October. My guess is that won't happen. Like other reviewers I could have ordered the lens elsewhere (for $100 more) and received it long before now. My mistake. For several weeks, I had a Nikon D200 body with no lens. Finally bought a Nikon 50mm lens just to have something to use. If this order is cancelled it will be my last purchase at Amazon.
