5 out of 5 stars Great Lens   November 30, 2006

I have been waiting a long time for this lens. I was on many lists to get this lens, but after 6 months a local dealer called me tell he had two in stock. I bought it for 749 plus tax (pretty much the going price) you should buy only from authorized dealers otherwise there is no 5 year warranty. Many dealers advertise for less, but try and buy it from them, they either don't have in stock or try to sell you everything separate (lens hood, lens cap, lens case, etc. By the time you order everything it cost more that others.
The lens is awesome, The vibration reduction is outstanding. I consistently get sharp photos at 1/15 at 200mm. I have taken many sharp photos at 1/8 but not as consistent. You must hold camera stable to be able to so this. There is some barrel distortion at the extreme end , but very acceptable. Some vigneting at some stops but again, totally acceptable. I shot with a D70. Buy this lens its the only lens you'll need!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars it may be available from your local camera dealer at times...   November 23, 2006

if you're in the Dallas, TX area, and you happen to be a local, you can often get this lens from Competitive Camera if you stop in and ask to be put on the list for it. I got mine within 3 days and the fine gentlemen sold it at just a little more than MSRP...$749 to be exact. Yes you pay local taxes, but Ramsey and Eugene are truly dedicated to the photographer. You come in once, and they know you for a lifetime. No games, no emails after placing the order saying it really won't be shipped...that's worth paying the local brick and mortar taxes in my opinion.

this lens is fantastic, it rarely leaves my D200...the rating above is for the lens

I purchased the lens late in October from a Local photo dealer in Melbourne FL for $699 plus 6% tax. It was the last one he had in stock at that price. The new price was $750. The price had gone up but the sticker on the box showed the price as $699 so he honored that price. Sometimes it pays to buy from a local dealer. The lens is excellent.I am using it on a Nikon D80

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and unique   October 25, 2006

This is an incredibly capable and versatile lens which replaces every lens in an amateur's camera bag, and most in a pro's kit. Images are high-contrast and low-distortion. The zoom range is great, the image stabilization is useful and unique, and the lens is relatively compact. This is the first lens in photographic history to combine so much so well!

I am sorry for the customers who have had trouble with Amazon -- normally a good and fair retailer. I would like to offer praise for Adorama in NY. I ordered my 18-200 December '05 at the "pre-boom" price of $669 (Nikon retail was $699 then) and, even though it took 8 months for me to get the lens, they honored the price.

During the backorder time, nobody else could get the lens either, so I wasn't really missing anything. Anyway, kudos to Adorama for honoring a "contract" in a way Amazon has been unwilling or unable to do.

I do not think it is right to penalize this lens just because Amazon has screwed up the OFP. People here who are desperately in need of the lens should buy this from dealers who have ready in stock. Ofcourse these guys will charge a $150-$200 premium. You should be able to get this lens with a few dealers for $899. This lens is simply amazing and too good to be true. The images are tack sharp and have nice contrast. This lens is sharper than its competitor Tamron 18-200mm. Is it worth twice? Yes it is for the amazing picture quality it produces. The sharpness is remarkable. The vibration reduction does work actually. I can shoot consistenly at 200mm @ 1/15 second and the images are very sharp. There is a little barrel distortion at the wide end but no worse than competition. Vignetting is minimal and almost absent at f8. This lens is a marvel of Nikon engineering. Simply fantastic.
