4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not perfect.   February 6, 2007

I've had this lens about 6 months and have maybe 1,000 images with it. Excellent zoom range, reasonably sharp images, VR works great, relatively compact size. It really is a great walking-around-lens when you can only choose one. This is the one to pack. Negatives for me are the zoom creep which is a constant annoyance (even when racked to 18mm it still slips). Too bad there isn't a way to lock it down. I also don't care for the bokeh at all so I avoid this lens in certain situations where that is important. The build quality is a little iffy compared to the 12-24 and 80-400. I do like being able to take hand held spontaneous street night shots - very much. I still prefer my 50mm f1.8 for tripod shots (what a bargain of a sharp lens). Too bad about the availability issues. I waited about 5 months. I think the hype on this lens is a bit over the top but that's just my opinion. Good lens, but just one more tool in the bag. Glad I've got one, but not a major difference maker for me.

4 out of 5 stars What is up with Amazon's pricing policies?   January 27, 2007

I am very disappointed that Amazon is charging $250 more than MSRP for this lens. With that said, I would have still given it 4 stars. I highly recommend this glass for anyone wishing to lighten their load without sacrificing quality. My only two complaints?

1.) Lens creep when shooting down on my subject.
2.) A slightly cheap feel to the zoom.

Otherwise, this beauty has replaced two or three other lenses in my bag. Just don't pay $1000. You should only pay $750-800.

If I were you, I would order the D-200 with this lens in a kit. It will be all you need for most shooting (other than specialty stuff).

5 out of 5 stars Nikon Rules, Amazon Flubs   January 19, 2007

I ordered this lens through Amazon many months ago--so far back I cannot pinpoint exactly when--and was informed that it was not in stock and was given a promise date. The "not in stock-new promise date" was repeated a number of times until finally, near the end of last year, Amazon decided to cancel the order because they could not supply the lens. That was somewhat troubling since I had purchased a Camera-body only- in anticipation of getting the lens. I had to obtain the lens through another source via the net, although at a premium price. C"est la vie! It is one heck of a good lens, however.

I waited forever for this lens-and when it finally arrived I wasn't dissapointed. Seems to cover most of my needs and elimates some primes from my bag. In my opinion worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, sharp, light   January 9, 2007

This is indeed a fantastic lense, in the best tradition of Nikkor lenses. It works well with my D200 and delivers sharp, focused images every time. Highly recommended.
