This lens is good as it gets!!! April 17, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
When you die and go to heaven, if you where a kind hearted photographer with a great eye, St Peter gives you a Nikon D200 with this 18-200mm VR zoom. To get the most out of this lens the user needs to carefully learn its digital features as a part of the Nikon D200 system. This lens is much more that a zoom composition aid. It's worth attending a car, boat or horse race just to play with the image stabilization (VR) capabilities.
If you were born rich or have worked way too hard in your life just buy one!!
Agree, it's awesome April 15, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I would not necessarily agree with a previous reviewer's assessment that it is lightweight. I guess it's relative, but of the three lenses I own for my D80 it is the heaviest; although not so much that it's a hassle to carry. I have found this lens to be great for a lot of different situations from landscapes to portraits. One thing though, do heed the manual's, and Scott Kelby's book's, advice to turn the VR off when shooting with this lens on a tripod. One thing to note, this lens is hard to come by and the vendors who do have some in stock are charging a premium over MSRP. You have to decide if the premium is worth it (I decided it was) or if you want to get it up to $200 cheaper by waiting several weeks to months. Eventually Nikon will get enough into the marketplace, but they aren't there yet.
Glue it to your camera - almost April 12, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
No the lens doesn't do everything. But after about six months on my camera its been the go to lens for 90% of my shots. Lowlight, macro and extensive tele work need something more, but for everything else you can just keep it on. The real benefit of this lens is that its sharp and contrasty from 18mm up through about 170mm. Its main problems are vignetting at wide apertures and distortion. On most photos its not noticeable, but when it is a problem Photoshop with PTlens or DxO can get you results that look like a pro lens because you've got the inherent sharpness and contrast to work with. For its great flexibility, convenience, and dust protection (from not having to change lenses all the time) its worth its price.
Update Aug 2 2008 Ok, I've had it for over a year now and I hate to admit it but I don't use it that much anymore. I only use it when I can only take one lens with me. Overall, I prefer a smaller lighter lens and this guy is a tad large. As I've observed my shooting I found the range I tend to like and frankly I now find an old Nikon 35-105 f3.5-4.5 on my camera much more often. Its a really sharp lens on a DX sensor and easier to carry around. Ok, there you have it - once the blush of novelty has worn off.
Very convenient April 11, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Undoubtedly a great achievement by Nikon to offer this 18/200 range, very convenient to carry. A lower F/stop alternative would have made this lens even more successful.
The ultimate lens April 11, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
there are 1000+ reviews about this lens. i am going to put my openions only:
First, Pros: 1. versatile. 2. effective VR. 3. 11x Zoom 4. sharp images. 5. quick and quit focus.
Cons: 1. expensive. 2. a bit heavy. 3. suffer some distortion. 4. f/3.5, i wish it was 2.8.
overall, i am very happy with with this lens, if you are like me, who carry only one lens for everything, you can not go wrong with this lens.
