Eh..... May 10, 2007 8 out of 19 found this review helpful
This lens was too good to be true when I first got it; I've had it for almost a year now, and after using it everyday, it's been letting me down lately. It's still very sharp and clear; always has been, but the autofocus just...stops working sometimes. It's as if it wants to autofocus whenever IT wants to, and not you.
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem, but it's a big deal if you need your autofocus, as a lot of prosumers do; those with a D40 or D80.
The range is unbeatable, I can attest to that, but if you decide to get it, you had better start saving again, because you're going to need a new lens in less than a year. I love the Nikon name, and highly recommend all their products, but this lens could have been built much better. I hate to even say anything negative about them, but it must be said.
An alternative lens to look into is the predecessor to this one: the 24-120 VR. It's the same focal length and speed, it's cheaper (but built much better than the 18-200), and it has Internal Focusing, a feature than the 18-200 doesn't have. The only negative thing about this lens is that it doesn't have quite the range of the 18-200, as it is not a DX lens. I personally think it's a much better investment than the 18-200, but the 18-200 is definitely worth a shot.
Great Lens May 7, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great lens with wide range and and good optics I have not noticed any lens creep. I have just received my Lens and it works fine. I did notice some vingetting at 200MM and 5.6F when shooting a large solid color background sky, wall, etc. Other that that is is a very fun and good lens.
Highly Recommended May 7, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
To save my time and time for everyone else - simply said " highly recommended, if you can afford it, BUY IT".
word of advice April 27, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am extremely happy with this lens, you will find plenty of positive feedback all over these reviews. I mostly appreciate the zoom range and the VR feature that work wonders. I have taken really astonishing night pictures that looked way better with this lens than with the Nikon 12-24 f/4.
Anyway the cons I have found is that the one I bought brand new on an online store came out of the box with some noticeably big dust specks and this is the second time I am sending it to Nikon for cleaning. My advice is prefer going to an physical store rather than buying online, before buying please:
- Ask the seller to open the box. - Take the lens and remove the caps on both ends. - Point the lens to any light source and see through it looking for any possible dust speck, you will be surprised.
While I got myself into this bad buying experience I really hope you wont and by that will force Nikon to take a little bit more care for the QUAL rather than the QUANT. Google "Nikon 18 200mm dust speck" and you will be surprised.

Pricey but soooo handy April 18, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you want a lens that stays on 24/7 while you chase your kids around (and carry their stuff altogether) and try to take decent pictures, well this is it. Good for every occasion, from wedding to landscape. Every once in a while I look up at new lenses wondering if it is time to get a new one, but having the 18-200mm, another one does not make sense unless you have the TIME to change lenses and the will to carry them. I am not a pro, and with this lens and my D70s I am way too happy. Sometimes when I am out shooting pictures I hardly have the time to change the camera settings, I cannot imagine changing the lens too. My other lenses are in the cabinet.
If you are a professional you may get 4 lenses that have better performances, I am sure. But I have read reviews from pros that do like this pricey toy too.
