4 out of 5 stars Good lens   June 14, 2008
Good lens, it covers a large number of situations.
The only problems is the weight.

4 out of 5 stars Great All-In One Lens with Just-Above-Average Quality   June 12, 2008

The biggest reason I bought this lens was for convenience. That said, I pretty much knew what to expect and wasn't surprised at the results: a convenient, well-built lens with excellent VR, decent optical elements, and some distortion issues at most focal lengths (although fixable in software, read on.) I asked myself what I needed before I bought this lens, and after much deliberation I made the right choice and can reccomend the lens to the same type of person as me: a non-professional shooter who values mobility and convenience over lugging around a huge camera bag of lenses and prefers to spend most of the time participating in life in front of the camera rather than behind it. This lens lets me do that: I'd rather have an "average" quality shot than no shot at all due to lens switching or sore shoulders from 50 lb camera bags, broken/stolen equipment etc. I toss this and my D40 in an old army engineer bag and I'm ready to hike, sightsee, or vacation.

Honestly though, some people might be better off buying one of the new point and shoot super zooms (the Canon S5 comes to mind, I used an S1 and S2 for years with great results,) but for me I really wanted the superior sensor/high ISO performance/RAW capability of the Nikon DSLR class cameras and to have the same level of convenience I had before, this lens is pretty much the top choice right now.

Yes, this lens has distortion and vignetting. Sometimes lots of it, depending on the focal length. Easy: DxO (which Amazon sells) processes images from the 18-200 beautifully, and pretty much makes your final images just about as good as any other decent lens.

I felt the price was a tad high though; all said and done I'd rate this lens in the low five hundred range (not six.)

5 out of 5 stars Love it   June 12, 2008

This has put the icing on the cake for my d40X. I bought it for the long range and because my wife didn't want to bother with changing lenses. What I did not appreciate (until I used it) was the how the flexibility can give so many shots from one place - wide, tight, something interesting catches your eye off to the corner -- all with just a twist and click.

I'm getting rave reviews for my pictures. I'm smart enough not to give the camera full credit, but this lens sure makes getting the shot you want a whole lot easier.

See others for the technical stuff - I'd only agree. It gives great shots (clarity, color, etc), the VR is a godsend, and the flexibility is the ultimate reason to get this lens. Love it.

Con: If I could change anything, it would be the weight. It negates the perk of having the light compact body of a d40x, and requires a bit more of a "commitment" to carry it around. The price tag hurt too, but it is worth it, when you consider the alternatives. Should that be enough to discourage anyone .... nnnna. You'll realize that once you use it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Lens !!   June 7, 2008
I am an amateur photographer. I love closeups and colorful landscapes.

This is one amazing Lens. Right out of the box..it proved itself ! Some of the test pictures I shot were just unimaginable without the VR. Focus is fast and the pictures came out sharp. I did not notice any creep.

I have a 35-70 and a 70-300 Lens. Now all I need is this lens !! No more problems of Dust getting into the CCD.

Thanks Nikon for a superb lens and thanks Amazon for the free PRIME shipping which arrived as promised !!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.   June 7, 2008

This lens is rela nice and to not have to switch back and forth from 18-55mm to 55mm-200mm is real nice. Kinda heavy. It is fast little louder than what I'm use to but not many of my lenses are this fast.
