4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Outdoor Usage   January 4, 2007
I purchased the this lens hood with the matching lens just as a "best practice". I do believe it is worth the money and that a hood is appropriate in almost any condition.

GOOD
- eliminates all but the most powerful lens flare (i.e. pointing the camera at the sun)

- protects the lens somewhat

- durable and locks onto lens snugly

BAD
- makes lens even more bulky. I am struggling to find a bag which will accomodate my Digital Rebel XTI and a 28-135mm lens attached and equipped with this hood.

- the felt on the inside picks up fuzz. I don't know how Canon would fix this problem, but even being very careful you may notice flecks of lint and dust caught in the felt which lines the inside of the hood.

- the plastic on the outside quickly smudges with fingerprints.

This is just an FYI, not a bad point. If you use the built-in flash from a matching DSLR with this hood, you may very well get a nasty shadow. Using a higher quality flash which sits higher up on the camera eliminates this issue completely (in my experience).

4 out of 5 stars Plastic Costs How Much?   January 4, 2007

I couldn't give this product lower than 4 stars because it does exactly what it advertises it does, protects your lens and helps shield unwanted light. I also could not give it 5 stars since I don't know what kind of crack Canon smokes to charge their customers as much as they do for a ring of plastic? Not a good way to build brand loyalty.

3 out of 5 stars Look more "pro" but not very effective   December 8, 2006

It might be too small/short to block flare, offer some protection. It's rather expensive for a piece of plastic too.

Good fit, works as advertised, stores on lens. Helps keep night dew off the lens as well as unwanted light out during the day.
