Great Quality of Photos November 2, 2007 Great Book! Photos are in a very good quality. Like Aliens from Outerspace! Very good Price!
Breathtaking November 1, 2007 I have always been curious about the creatures of the deep. This book brings it all to life. The images are surreal with the naturally vivid bioluminescence of these unique animals set against the black of the abyss. While some behaviors and creatures have yet to be fully understood, the descriptions and essays (by experts in the field) give a very good idea of what life is like thousands of meters below the earths' surface. Who would have known that the color ....... makes one nearly invisible at these great depths? How is life sustained without light, and how have creatures adapted to this? Is there life in the toxic waters near geothermal vents? You may be surprised by the answers, and trust me, the pictures will leave you speachless.
The Deep: Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss October 31, 2007 The book was in perfect condition. Every page is a like a jewel, a photo of deep sea fish and other creatures with looks from the bizarre to the dream-like surreal. The book is an amazing find, something that should be in everybody's collection who is interested in science and newly explored parts of our world.
Beyond the realm of SCUBA diving October 20, 2007 The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the fascinating variety and richness of life in the deep. THE DEEP achieves its purpose by presenting more than two hundred breath-taking images of creatures living far below the range of sunlight. The material is presented in tweny-odd sections, each preceded by a concise introduction, written by experts and remarkable for clarity and scope. The quality of reproduction is masterful. The use of black as background colour greatly enhances the beauty of the images. It is especially effective in revealing the effects of bioluminescence. The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss
Gorgeous, brilliant, beautiful book October 15, 2007 I've always been fascinated by the deep sea. As David Attenborough has pointed out in the marvellous BBC series "Blue Planet", half of the world's surface is covered by water more than a mile deep, and we still know very little about what goes on down there. More men have walked on the moon than have penetrated the deepest ocean depths. This magnificent publication helps redress the balance. It takes you down to this bizarre world with its pitch blackness and crushing pressures and shows you some of its inhabitants (I believe a new species is discovered every ten days). The pictures are augmented by fascinating descriptions. The only sad note is that two of the creatures depicted, the two enormous squids (giant and colossal) with their dinner plate-sized eyes, will probably never be seen the way they have been depicted (artists' representations, as opposed to photos) - it was only recently that Japanese researchers got actual photos of the live animals. Still the artists' representations are fascinating and excite the imagination with the knowledge that there be real monsters down there and that this is what they look like.
Claire Nouvian has done us a great service by producing this book showing us an extraordinary world, and one which man is in the process of destroying without even knowing what's down there.
