Great picture quality, good features November 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had very specific features I wanted in a digital picture frame. This model delivers in nearly all of them. Here is a breakdown of the good and the bad:
1) Picture quality is outstanding. Much better than I expected. This frame really brings pictures to life in a way that traditional prints can't. 2) There is no product logo blaring on the front of the frame. All you see is the dark frame and the picture itself. 3) There are several slideshow settings, including many different transitions and many different lengths of time for each picture. 4) Buttons, which are located on the back of the unit, take some time to learn. But once you do it is very easy to operate. Somebody not good with electronics, like an elderly person, may have a little trouble, however.
The drawbacks I've encountered are relatively minor:
1) No remote control or wireless capability. Since this is a gift for my elderly parents, this wasn't a concern for me. 2) No option for having multiple albums from which to choose. Or if there is, I haven't found out how to set it up yet. All photos are lumped together on my memory card. 3) Compact Flash disk is VERY hard to remove. An elderly person may need pliers to remove it, in fact. Since I only use memory cards, I have not tested the PC connection method. 4) The frame will crop photos if they are not resized. Most digital pictures are not taken in the widescreen format, so the top and bottom will be slightly cropped. The best way to ensure this doesn't happen is to resize horizontal photos to 720 px wide and vertical photos to 480 px tall. This will ensure photos will be displayed at maximum quality at the original dimension. 5) The stand on the back comes off VERY easily. I highly recommend taping it to the frame so that it does not come off. I made the mistake of picking it up by the stand, and when it came off the frame fell onto the table and scratched.
Several reviews state that settings are erased if the unit is unplugged. The clock settings do get erased if unplugged, but the slideshow settings remain intact.
Bottom line: Excellent picture quality, solid slideshow features, no wireless and no remote, and watch out for the stand.
Excellent quality at a fair price November 1, 2008 We purchased this frame recently, and we're very happy with it. The photos displayed are very crisp and the colors are true. The clear and black frame is classy but unobtrusive.
Photo transitions are smooth and resolution is excellent for this price range (I paid $89). I use a 2 Gig Kingston SD card which holds many hundreds of photos at good resolution, and the frame handles all of the most popular memory cards/sticks.
The Philips frame now sits next to a Westinghouse digital frame and this unit's display is so significantly better we are replacing the Westinghouse frame with a second Philips.
As with most other digital frames, the controls are on the back, but this frame has a nice intuitive "help" screen. The screen has icons that mirror where the buttons are on the back showing their functions. No need to look behind the screen or fumble for the right button. I really like this feature. It shows a well thought out design.
The frame has an auto on and off feature which you can set to any time. We haven't used this, we just use the on/off switch, but it looks very easy to set up of you have use for it. Overall the frame is very much a plug and play operation. I just downloaded the pics to the SD card, plugged it in and set the transition type and timing. Dead easy and great results. I can't argue with that.
Highly recommended.
Highly recommended October 31, 2008 I tested the item just for only 1 day and it works great. Picture quality is great, design is better than the picture. I have tried it with a 4gb Kingston SD card and i did not see any problems. It has successfully displayed all the photos in the card. It looks like the new firmware does not look for a certain file name format.
The power adapter is 100-220 Volt so you can use this item without a voltage converter in other countries. I searched for this information before ordering the product but I was not able to find any specs about the power adapter. SO it is great to have it since I will take to Europe.
The only con is that it has no battery. It will reset settings when it is unplugged but it is not a problem.
Verry Happy October 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This frame has been around for several years! First it was high priced. I Have one for 1.5 Years. I enjoy it alot more than I thought. There are bigger frames out there but this size is fine for me. I have seen bigger frames but I like this one. I'm not going to go into the tech details as the are plenty of reviews out there. But for the going price $89 this is a verrry good bye. I plan several as x-mas presents. Note: I set it to come on when we get home and go off at night. Get a 4gig card to add manny pic.
clear and beautiful October 18, 2008 The menu took me a little while to figure out. Most important of all, you need to know to press the "i" button to make the onscreen menu disappear. But the photos look clear and beautiful, it has enough setting for us. I got it so my husband could have lots of photos of our daughter, present and past, at work, instead of keeping them on his computer there. Everyone stopped to watch the show. It could use clearer documentation, but we're very happy with it now.
