5 out of 5 stars Though Modern Painters has fallen off a bit, it still is one of the two best art magazines out there   April 28, 2006

Along with Parkett, Modern Painters remains one of the two 'must read' art magazines of the day. It has undergone two vast transformations over the last five years. Back in around 2001 it turned into a quarterly magazine and for the next four years it produced exceptional content. Just about every article was thoughtful and full of insights. On top of that they had a first rate caliber of gallery reviewers who highlighted the best shows of the quarter.

since 2005, the quality has dropped off a bit, but it is nice to get it monthly. The articles and reviews still live up to a high standard, though their is just not as many of them. I think that I would be more happy if they returned to the quarterly format, but I can live with what they are putting out today. Just compare it to the other trashy art magazines on bookstore shelves. At first glance they might all look a little interesting, but I guarantee you that all of the others (except Parkett) only have at best four or five pages of publishable content. Some of them might have better ad's (which is sometimes half the fun of these magazines), but they surely dont muster up in the realm of quality articles or reviews.

-------------------------------------------UPDATE---

I just wanted to amend this review a little. Over the last year and a half, this magazine has totally gone down-hill. I dont know how they could have taken the best art magazine and just utterly gutted it in such a short period of time, but they have managed to do so.

STAY AWAY FROM MODERN PAINTERS.

2 out of 5 stars Sad Decline   January 18, 2006

I bought this magazine faithfully every month. Then it changed and was a different product altogether. Poorly printed on dull paper, and unexciting with much less information. It was very disappointing change. An not worth the money it costs. I hardly ever buy it any more.

1 out of 5 stars SAD DECLINE   July 8, 2005

This once fascinating magazine suffered a "makeover" a few months ago; the good news is that it's now a monthly, the bad news is that it has totally changed for the worse, a re-heated mish mash of Art Forum and Art Papers, with more endless prating about Hirst and Emin in all their fatuous vacuity. I will treasure and reread my many back issues and continue to wonder how this could have happened. Very sad.

5 out of 5 stars MODERN PAINTERS Returns   January 5, 2005

Refreshing to see this articulate, informative, glib, and occasionally irreverent periodical on the newsstands again this month. While obviously not as high end in production as the better known arts magazines, the reproductions of the art discussed are excellent and the writing is some of the freshest around. Unafraid to tackle some controversial areas of contemporary art happenings, MODERN PAINTERS remains high on the list of those practicing art...and for those interested in the artists' viewpoint. An excellent magazine that holds an honored place in the studios of both artists and art devotees. Grady Harp, January 2005
