Hurting for Cash? May 5, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
If I new then what I know now, I would have bought the Canon for twice the price. The Sigma sounds great but is not reliable. It is not 100% compatable. Error signs for no reason! The instruction manual is ridiculous (very very brief). Even my Flash Photo instructor could not figure it out. At least Canon has a book! If you are hurting for cash and need a flash this may be a reasonable purchase. It does have tons of options. To be fair, I have not tried the Canon Flash. Who knows, it may have problems too.
The BEST!!! April 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
580EX II possibly the best flash I ever owned, very powerful. Great fire power with excellent controls and weather seal. The only thing that I wasn't happy about it ----too heavy!!
Great and Pricy Flashgun April 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been using a Sigma flash before that and I wasn't sure if this flash would improve a lot.
I did take the bite in the end and bought the 580EX and have to say that this flash is amazing. Not just the better ETTL function, but the variety of options that lets your creativity more playground is great.
Also the build quality of this flash is much better than the Sigma. the hotshoe as well as the body have a much sturdier feel.
Using a diffuser (I have the Gary Fong Cloud Dome) still adds more quality to this flashes light, but all in all this product is great.
I am not giving it 5 stars because of the price tag. Quality comes at a premium and this is how the world rocks, I know, but for Hobby Photographers the price is quiet steep
ps: For those considering a Sigma flash... if you cannot afford the price of the 580EX, then go for the Sigma. The ETTL is pretty good there as well. The build is pretty good too. The battery usage on both flashes is about the same. The 580EX will give you a wider spectrum of possibilities if you can afford it. Shooting without a flash if you can is much better in any case though :D
Had the 550 and even at this the 580 worth a quick time line upgrade to the 580 April 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I will not go into a brilliant technical dissertation as I am not able to both in desire and knowledge. I do know what works and what doesn't however and if Steve says it is worth it (the guy at the camera store and a really fine camera store) it is. He did so I bought it here as cheaper by far and he was right once again! I can not even tell you the brilliant upgrades to this unit in the case of this photographer for fun! I am considered by some to be a pro and am convinced you can be such and not make a dime. Ask my three l-series lenses if I am good? Anyway the features that assure proper flash in terms of amount of light and distance from the camera unit to the photographed subject is amazing and therefore the bouncing of of angles of light is easier to figure out for this hobby Canon lover or pro which ever way you see it.
Best of the best April 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's the best. Having the best flash has made more impact than upgrading to a 35mm sensor or having very expensive lenses. The extra power lights up the most distant objects possible & creates the most bounced lighting possible & gets you the fastest recharge time possible. It doesn't make any noises either.
Recharge time depends on the battery charge & the power setting. Manual mode with 100% power takes 30 sec to recharge using alkalines, 15 sec using old NiMH's, and 2 sec using brand new fully charged NiMH's. You'll go through lots of batteries using 100% power. It's still limited by physics.
E-TTL mode definitely reduces the recharge time & extends battery life by using just enough power. It's another matter of software overcoming physics to get the extra value. Using E-TTL within a few feet, the recharge time is almost instant.
