Amazon.com As movie midlife crises go, Shirley Valentine's is a doozy. A bored Northern England housewife, wondering what her life is about and how to navigate around her clueless husband, Shirley would be at her wits' end--except that she knows how to dream big. As played by the incomparable Pauline Collins (who created the role on Broadway, and won a Tony for it), Shirley embraces not only her own constricted life, but the dreams of the big, beautiful world beyond it. Directed by Lewis Gilbert (Educating Rita), Shirley Valentine is an anthem to the freedom of the soul--with a generous dose of salt of the earth. As she assesses her life, Shirley's humor never fails her: "I think sex is like supermarkets, you know, overrated. Just a lot of pushing and shoving and you still come out with very little at the end." Yet Collins' Shirley gets as much out of defending her right to her dream (a sunny holiday in Greece) as she does realizing it, and that makes for much of the glow of the film. For while Shirley has a cinematic romance on her vacation (Tom Conti plays the dreamboat), the affair is more of a metaphor for what Shirley insists on having in her real daily life. Watch for Joanna Lumley in a delicious cameo, pre-Ab Fab. And embrace this Valentine, and share it with those you love, all year round. --A.T. Shirley Vallentine November 28, 2008 Shirley Valentine has enjoyed screen and stage success as the story of the ignored and unappreciated British housewife who finally has it up to here with her demanding husband and clueless daughter, secretly running off to Mykonos, one of the Greek Isles, for a change of emotional and attitudinal landscape. Once she ditches her self-absorbed female companion on the trip, Shirley settles into an unexpected romance with a cafe owner (Tom Conti) who reminds her just how lonely she's been. Her decision not to return to the U.K. and stay at the hotel cafe to serve guests puts her husband in crisis and a little self-examination of his own as he packs his bags and heads for the Greek Isles to fetch her. Pauline Collins is witty and charming and very funny as Shirley Valentine, especially as she succumbs to the affections and flattery of her younger pursuer.
Shirley Valentine DVD, used October 30, 2008 DVD was in mint condition, came faster than I had anticipated and I am very pleased, as always, with Amazon! PS Great movie!
favorite girlfriend movie October 13, 2008 This is just a grand escape and my husband and I actually went to this very hotel just because of the movie. In fact we went twice and would go again. The movie is just a "grand upper" for women. Pauline Collins is spectacular.
Shirley is Lovely October 3, 2008 This is one of the most wonderful stories of self actualization I have ever sen. It has humor, love, resentment, anger, regret, sadnesss, and finally redemption. Although many would consider this a "chick-flick", I think there is a lesson forus husbands too...keep the relationship alive and listen to your partener, she is far more complex than you realize. Relationships drift apart from lack of communication, so talk to eachother. That is the ultimate lesson of this heartwarming movie.
.Women, listen up! September 28, 2008 For women of all ages, but most certainly for middle-aged and above, who have been or are married. You know when you're reading a good book or talking to a good friend and they just "get" everything you're feeling? There's hardly a better moment than that. Shirley Valentine is a keeper movie to pass among female friends and family. Men can watch, of course, but they're not likely to "get" it. Love it, love it, love it.
