Not as bad as people are saying. November 21, 2008 The U3 software really doesn't bother me. This flash drive is not intended for holding a lot of large files, but if you want an affordible flash drive to hold music, photos, ROMS, programs, essays, whatever, this is for you. The only real downside is that it only holds a gig. It also can be put on a keychain for travel.
Great tool, great price November 14, 2008 I love this product. The retractable design is slick looking and fun to use. The device is protected enough to have stood through constantly being thrown into a book bag along with keys, coins, etc. The U3 software is there to protect your data in case you leave the flash drive sitting out somewhere, although you can opt not to use it and/or remove it altogether if you want to take the chance. For the price of flash now, this item should be a staple for any student or office worker because the price/storage ratio is perfect. While there are other Sandisk flash drives out there now that can hold 16G or more, the little 1G is more than enough for all my stuff.
Fair Storage Device September 20, 2008 Good price for memory but weak casing. It breaks easily. You have to be very careful.
Sandisk not a good name anymore September 18, 2008 I thought that Sandisk was a trustworthy name when it came to memory. My experience has been that it is not. This is only the second thumb drive I've purchased and the first one was 5 years ago. Here I am thinking that All you have to do is plug the thing in, use it, eject it and take it out.
But no. Sandisk has added something called U3 that gets in way of all that. It has Skype and some games on it. I don't want Skype or Games, I'm buying a thumb drive!!! And It seems that you can't eject this from the computer without getting an error message that something is still in use. I guess that would be the U3 software? So, you have to shut your computer down to safely remove the drive.
I'll have to try removing the U3 software, and hopefully won't have any issues. I say save yourself the headache and go buy some other flash drive! I wish I had.
Try to get a product without U3. August 13, 2008 This flash drive worked well for 2 years, which warrants a 2-star review; it is compact and I appreciated the retractable jack. Unfortunately, the U3 system is finnicky in its compatibility with Windows: Works fine on 2000, fine on XP Home, crashed several computers at home and work running XP Professional.
When I upgraded my PC's operating system and crashed it with this drive I attempted to disable the U3 system, which required a software update from the manufacturer. In the process of applying the update my drive was corrupted and became unusable; I didn't lose any valuable data, but all the inconvenience on account of a superfluous program is irksome.
Long and short, try to find a simple mass storage device without any proprietary software, and if you do buy this thing, disable U3.
