1 out of 5 stars Watch out - Grey Market Lens with no Warantee   May 10, 2008

I bought this lens from Ace, and it needed repair (something came loose within the lens) and Nikon rejected it, saying it was not a US lens and therefor no warantee.

I like the lens

5 out of 5 stars Glad I purchased this...   May 9, 2008

I sold my nikon 18-55 kit lens and 55-200 VR to fund this lens, and I'm very glad I did. Image quality is good and it's so nice not to be changing lenses back and forth. This sucker is pretty heavy, so keep that in mind. The updated VR is MUCH better than on my 55-200. Very happy with my purchase. FYI, mine is a factory demo I purchased from Cameta Camera. I highly recommend that company.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Lens! Worth Every Penny.   May 6, 2008

This is an amazing lens. It is just as everyone describes it in all these reviews. However, a note of caution when you use this as your single lens. If you are going to use it indoors WITHOUT an external flash you will create a SHADOW on your pictures. In the 18mm - 24mm range, the camera's built-in flash is too low to "look" over the end of the lens. This will create a shadow on your flashed subject. However, you can zoom in to 24mm and the issue goes away. I love only carrying one lens and the amazing VR technology allows me to take low-level light photos without a tripod.

3 out of 5 stars Really less than I expected   May 4, 2008

Couple of years ago [...] review overcharged consumer interest to this product. More than a year since its release it was not easy to get, particularly outside of US. In Russia it was at some moment priced at over $[...], and still on order.

Not it's more or less what it's worth ~[...]. But still only in US.

For those who don't know who is Ken Rockwell, 18-200 is a very hi-tech lens which DOES NOT provide you with any technical miracles:

10x zoom range is always dengerous for quality. Most of my negative emotions are coming from this extreme zoom range. Distortions are high, for $[...] lens it's too much.

This is why I sold mine 2 months after I bought it with quite a difficulty. And I'm not a lense reviewer in my daily life and I don't make money on photography. Even more, I'm far away from US where you can buy/sell things easily. I still spent considerable time to sell this lens primarily for the reason of picture quality it's not a good companion for my D200.
