Amazon.com Product Description
The Canon FS-H37U 37MM filter set includes a neutral density (ND.8) filter, an MC protector filter and a soft case. The FS-H37U filter kit will help you both protect the expensive investment you made in your compatible Canon camera, as well as take better pictures under more challenging lighting conditions. The Canon FS-H37U filter set is designed to work specifically with Canon's DC40, HV10, Optura 10 and Optura 20 37-millimeter cameras.

The included neutral density filter appears grey and reduces the amount of light reaching the film. This has no effect on color balance but does provide several advantages. This ND.8 filter enables slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, allowing you to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars. This filter also decreases the depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background, and decreases the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400), which allows it to be used outdoors in bright situations. Finally, this ND.8 filter allows video cameras, which have fixed shutter speeds, to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure.

The included Multi-Layer Coated (MC) protection filter protects the lens from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs, and also reduces haze in landscape shots. If desired, this filter can be left on the lens at all times for protection, and provides the additional benefit of correcting for Ultraviolet (UV) light, which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details. To keep both filters undamaged during travel, this kit includes a convenient soft carrying case.

4 out of 5 stars A Necessary Accessory   June 28, 2008

Aside from providing basic lense protection, the ND filter part of this pair gives needed control for better contrast in bright sunlight. In a recent trip to the pyramids, with a glaring sun, the ability to get decent pictures, without a burned out sky, would have been impossible without the ND filter. It also allowed for reasonable pictures and video from within some of the peripheral sites, allowing views from inside the burial structures to the outside.
