Difficult to categorise. September 4, 2008 A 45 minute DVD in which presenter Bob Krist explains some of his more favourite settings on the Nikon D200 camera and the way in which he puts them to good effect. This product is more suited to owners of the D200 if only because they will recognise the various camera features which are highlighted as Mr Krist uses them.
Whilst the content was interesting, I found it difficult to identify exactly which category of photographer at whom this DVD is aimed. If, like myself, you have just purchased your very first DSLR (Digital single lens reflex camera) and are wondering where to start, I would suggest this is not the DVD for you. If, however, you have started to take some decent photos, it should help you progress onto slightly (but only slightly) more advanced techniques. If you are already well down the road of taking excellent photographs using the many varied settings that are available on the modern DSLR then you will gain little from this product.
I really must register my overall disappointment. Just think about the product titles. Firstly we have a DVD from the "Nikon School." I would have thought the very word Nikon would ensure a content worthy of that name. But not so. Secondly, the DVD is called "Understanding Digital Photography." I may be a newcomer to the DSLR but, like Mr Krist, I too have sold my photography to National Geographic and I am also an award-winning author. My understanding of digital photography, however, was not enhanced by this product and my overall knowledge is no richer for my having studied the content closely.

A middle'n production July 13, 2008 I bought this dvd to help a friend learn about her first digital camera a Nikon D60. She has no experiance with SLR's and no experiance with digital, just 35mm point and shoot cameras. We watched this together. It was a good and accurate presentation of many of the things you can do with a Nikon DSLR and almost compleatly useless to her because she'll need months of experiance, and a few thousand pictures under her belt, befor she will be able to start to benefit from the information on this disk. On the other hand it almost put me to sleep, but then I have used film and digital SLR's for 40 years.
This dvd does not cover the absolute basics of how to make and save a photo, or how to judge weather you have made a good comopsition, but it does show you ways you can use your DSLR to grow your skills as a photographer. Once you are ready to take control of your photography away from the camera (program mode), this dvd can help. As for my friend, I hope she will become comfortable enough with her camera in the next few months, that we'll be able to sit down and watch this dvd again.
re-Beginner June 18, 2008 It was good for the basics, an overview, but don't pay full price for it.
Nikon D 40 user June 15, 2008 The DVD is very helpful in learning the details of getting the most out of a DSLR.
For all first time Nikon DSLR users February 20, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got this DVD with my purchase of the Nikon D40 which this DVD came free as a bundle with it.
Yes, this was my first time I hold in my hands a DSLR camera! and by playing this DVD; I, for the first time found out the difference between the P-S-A-M options and why do we need external flash, and types of Lenses and situations and good tips for night pictures. and he defines all the technical photography terms such as Exposure, ISO, Depth-of-Field etc.
in simple words. this DVD will tell you exactly what are the manual functions are for your Nikon DSLR camera. The DVD covers Nikon range D40 to D80
Because I got my new Nikon D40 camera and so excited to take photos, I really dont have the time to read the full manual or read a book about photography just simply to get started. instead, this is a one hour very interesting DVD to inform a "FIRST TIME DSLR USER" about the potentials he can do with his new DSLR camera.
I give it 4 stars because it covers all the basics (which a beginner need) but this DVD left me thirsty for more information which I ended up buying this great book Nikon D40/D40x Digital Field Guide.
I am happy I got this DVD first time I bought my Camera
