Product Description Despite Prohibition, the '20s was the decade of jazz, flappers and hip flasks. While some took their vote and joined the Woman's Christian Temperance Movement, others, well, took liberties. Compiled here for the first time are more than 200 publicity stills and photos of some of America's first "It" girls—the silent film-era starlets who paved the way for the cacophony of Monroes and Madonnas to follow. Accompanying these iconic images are the stories behind them, including accounts from surviving Ziegfeld Girls, as well as ads featuring them that helped perpetuate the allure of It girl glamour. When rare and striking portraits of these women surfaced on the internet in 1995, author Robert Hudovernik began researching their source. What he discovered was the work of one of the first "star makers" identified most with the Ziegfeld Follies, Alfred Cheney Johnston. Johnston, a member of New York's famous Algonquin Round Table who photographed such celebrities as Mary Pickford, Fanny Brice, the Gish Sisters, and Louise Brooks, fell out of the spotlight with the demise of the revue. A sumptuous snapshot of an era, this book is also a look at the work of this "lost" photographer.

Wonderful ! December 12, 2008 This book contains page after page of breathtaking photos. The women are beautiful and no page has been skimped on.Each time I turn the page, I have to catch my breath. If you are a lover the this era. You will treasure this book. Of my book collection, this is definitely in the top 5. Probably number one. I love the 1920's, the style, the textiles, the poses. I cannot say enough about this book. You will not be sorry if you make this purchase. Buy It !
Severe pixelization on several pictures! HORROR! November 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was as horried as the other reviewer who pointed out that some pictures have obviously been resized digitally and they present severe pixelization that you would only find in third-rate fan websites! I believe this is truly inexcusable. Even kids these days know how to resize pictures! For a price tag of 40 USD and a book of this mid-size this is unbelievable. If I want to look at pictures of this quality I can do it from the comfort of my chair in front of a pc. This low quality really detracts from the subject and art that is the subject of the book. It's a book about pictures, it's not like they are just secondary. After seeing these awful prints, I was so distracted trying to see what other pictures had this problem, maybe less than some, but it surely took away the enjoyment of looking at the pictures. Also, the only fact I could directly dismiss is that there is a picture of Barbara Stanwyck and the caption says that after her stint in the business of these shows she made [and they mention two titles of movies in the 30s] before starring in the tv show The Big Valley! So if someone doesn't know that Miss Stanwyck is an Academy Award winner who has starred in first-rate features throughout the 30s, 40s and 50s and beyond, they would be lead to believe that she was just a dancer? I don't think something like this should be dismissed as being picky, who knows what else is being incorrectly formulated in this book. For books on subjects like these, where research is hard and there aren't many sources, at least get your facts right before you publish them, there are already enough people who are rewriting history because they don't know any better.
Nice Vintage Pictures But October 10, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have seen pictures of full nude women for sale from this period on ebay but after getting this book the full nude women are very few & far between so do not buy if you are looking for vintage nude women showing pubic hair photos from that era.
beautiful and infomative coffee book of a phenomenal photographer! July 28, 2008 I also bought this book for the photos and to learn about the Ziegfeld girls. I was really impressed about the variety of subjects that Mr. Johnston photographed. The text was illuminating and really "fleshed out" the subjects of Mr. ACJ's photos. It left me wanting more and now I want to learn more about this underappreciated man and his work. Buy this book if you are into the history of Ziegfeld girls, 1920's fashion photography, or interested in an amazing photographer. I, too, wish the book was a bit larger so the pictures could be really appreciated. A must have!
For Hollywood Fans Too June 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is gorgeous. The photos are reproduced quite well, and the book looks and feels like quality. Included is a nice history of Ziegfeld Follies, along with brief biographies of many of the women.
Julie Newmar provides a fascinating Foreword (her mother was in the Ziegfeld Follies and posed for photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston--as did a teenage Newmar). We also learn much about photographer Johnston.
The highlight of the book for me, though, is the photographs (some are nudes) of actresses, including Renee Adoree, Adrienne Ames, Tallulah Bankhead, Theda Bara, Lina Basquette, Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, Billie Burke, Norma Shearer, Claudette Colbert, Betty Compton, Dolores Costello, Marion Davies, Claudia Dell, Billie Dove, Jeanne Eagels, Mary Eaton, and more.
Like George Hurrell, Johnston was a true artist. His work makes these beautiful women immortal.
