5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail   January 6, 2009

I researched for a restoration and retouching book about a year and half ago and came across this title in Amazon due to its high ratings.

Well the high ratings are founded. This book covered everything I needed to learn and more. My task was to repair old photos for a family documentary and the techniques in this book really show you the right way to do things. The right way saves you a ton of time with much better results.

Since I already know Photoshop I found I could jump around the chapters to find a similar photo that suffered from the same damage that I was up against. I found an example of EVERYONE of my photos from color balance to fading to totally ripped and decaying. I brought back my photos to the level of this book and amazed my audience. Humbly, I could not have done it without this book.

The writing is not pretentious and Katrin really elevates your knowledge through intelligent analogies, sound methods and best practices. She not only teaches you how to repair but also how to analyze a photo and determine the best method which has instilled in me how to properly look at an image and be realistic. Just when I thought I had it all she includes a very valuable chapter on fashion retouching. This chapter reveals alot of trade secrets that I found invaluable.

As a result of my new founded enthusiasm this book has gifted me I have bought 3 more of these books giving them out as gifts to my friends and family who use Photoshop. I keep it at my side at all times.

I just want to make a point that if you are a total amateur and do not know Photoshop on a level of understanding the basic tools and overall functions then you may want to buy a book to learn that first. This book already assumes you know Photoshop because they go over the tools from an intermediate point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Best retouching book I ever read. Took one month and I was so much better.   December 12, 2008

This book was so easy to read and see the results. It took me one month of an hour a day and I think I have learned and retained my Photoshop skills better than 10 years of just using it on my own. People think I am a miracle worker now and all because of Katrin's book. Plus she is great at getting back to you if you have a question.

5 out of 5 stars Best Restoration Book!   October 6, 2008

I got this to gain the photoshoping skills to restore glass plate photographs and paper photographs dating from 1900 to 1940 which were damaged from years of storage in an outdoor shed at my grandparent's house. I have used just about every method in this book to restore the photos. It is very well thought out and includes lots of figures to help at going through the tutorials. All images in the book can be downloaded from the book's companion website.

This book covers color correction, overcast, breaks, cuts, scratches, dust, mold, texture, exposure, tone, and more!

Katrin's book is my new bible for retouching and better understanding how the various blend layers work together to restore and improve photographs. Presented in an easy-to-learn, visual format, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in getting the most from Photoshop.
