Good but.......... November 6, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was very happy with the quality of my used CD purchase. It was flawless, and without any scratches or blemishes. However I was suprised to see that the copy I received was a promo only copy and and "Not for Sale" and "Promotional Copy Only" all over it. I called the record label (Nuclear Blast) and told them the sellers e-mail address. Normally I wouldn't care, but the copy I got had no booklet with it.

As strange as it may sounds, I purposefully stopped listening to Armada before buying this album. Since the band considers it a follow up to that album, and due to the overwhelmingly positive reception that Armada received, ignoring that album seemed like the only way to give Kolossus a fair shot. Silly. I should have had more faith in Keep of Kalessin.
Kolossus is hands down the best black metal release of this year, which is quite a feat considering that Satyricon, Ihsahn, Belphegor, and Khold all released albums this year. The speed and fury of Kolossus is unmatched and unparalleled. But, true to the Keep of Kalessin style, this album weaves melodies in with the crushing assault.
This album is definitely an par with Armada. And while it is certainly a continuation of that album, it is by no means a clone. There are no reused themes, riffs, or melodies. It is also worth mentioning that the production is somewhat different from previous Kalessin albums, with a much greater emphasis being placed on the drums, which are much higher in the mix. The beats and drum patterns are much more varied and less predictable as well.
In short, an excellent album. But I suggest buying the edition with the bonus DVD, if you're into that sort of thing.
