Product Description
When horses outlive their usefulness to humans, they are often treated as disposable — auctioned off and sent to the slaughterhouse. But thanks to the work of rescue organizations and horse sanctuaries, many of these formerly unwanted horses are enjoying genuine appreciation and newfound freedom. The horses in this book were abused, neglected, abandoned, rejected. They are lame, old, blind, or just unattractive according to modern ideas of beauty. Some are crossbreeds with no clearly defined bloodline. Others are wild horses that have been forced off public lands. They are enjoying a second chance to live a meaningful and dignified life. They are here to teach us different measures of value, measures we have almost forgotten.
To document these remarkable creatures, acclaimed equine photographer Tony Stromberg traveled to sanctuaries across North America. While many horse books focus on exotic, flashy breeds or famous thoroughbreds, Tony chose to capture the soul of “working-class” equines — many enjoying love and freedom for the first time. Through gorgeous photography, The Forgotten Horses reveals the profound spirit of these amazing animals and honors the people and sanctuaries that have offered them a well-deserved home.

Life-changing December 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A little piece of magic. This book is a rare treat, exposing the power and majestic nature of the horse in addition to the skills of Tony Stromberg. Having met Tony personally since purchasing his previous book, Spirit, I may be somewhat biased in my referral. However, I truly believe that his latest book is a 'little piece of magic' and is undeniably a perfect gift for anyone who with a glimmer of interest in the horse, in photography, in history, in culture or in art. Or a gift for yourself - you will not be disappointed. Tony's work has an intriguing way of manifesting its power within its readers...the knock on effect may be subtle, but I'm sure there will be one, as there was with me.
SPIRIT BROUGHT FORTH IN THESE DYNAMIC ANIMALS December 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Tony Stromberg has an eye for lighting and the ability to capture these beautiful animals. He is now using his well known ability to bring awareness to these forgotten horses. He brings hope to this planet of ours and reminds us all of our purpose to use our gifts to help and love all that is around us. I am a book hound. I love books and especially horse books. I believe Tony is the best and I have Spirit Horses as well as this book. Great Christmas Gift to anyone. I know I have bought one for myself as well as friends. Thanks Tony for your wonderful contribution.
Why is "Forgotten Horses" Like a Beatles album? December 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Because it's all hits and no filler. Page after page of stunning, magnificent horse photography. Stromberg has the eye, the technique and the dedication necessary to produce these exceptional photographs. Props to him too, for bringing a much needed focus on these neglected and sometimes abused animals. Tony Stromberg is to horses what Ansel Adams was to mountains...the modern master.
Tony Stomberg is a blessing to horses December 9, 2008 I have had the pleasure of visiting Tony Stromberg on his ranch and seen him interact with horses as well as his camera. He has a keen and kind eye and I am really excited about his new book. You will probably want to sit quietly for hours and let the gentle manes of those horses wash over your spirit :) L.R.
Stromberg allows us to see horses through his eyes December 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a fellow equine photographer who has had the pleasure of befriending Tony Stromberg, I found pleasure in both the words and images of this book as well as the knowing that such a truly talented and spiritual human could so well show us his close connection with the world of Equus in such evocative ways. Tony does not simply "shoot" with his camera, instead he makes time to connect with the soul he focuses on. Our gift is being able to travel with him, through this book, to the horses that otherwise would not be seen by us. With this blessing, he brings hope that the Forgotten Horses will be found and cherished.
