Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Inspired by Chekhov's short stories--and by his own contagious joy in the book form--photographer Paul Graham has created A Shimmer of Possibility, comprised of 12 individual books, each a photographic short story of everyday life. Some are simple and linear--a man smokes a cigarette while he waits for a bus in Las Vegas, or the camera tracks an autumn walk in Boston. Some entwine two, three or four scenes--while a couple carry their shopping home in Texas, a small child dances with a plastic bag in a garden. Some watch a quiet narrative break unexpectedly into a sublime moment--as a man cuts the grass in Pittsburgh it begins to rain, until the low sun breaks through and illuminates each drop. Graham's filmic haikus shun any forceful summation or tidy packaging. Instead, they create the impression of life flowing around and past us while we stand and stare, and make it hard not to share the artist's quiet astonishment with its beauty and grace. The 12 books gathered here are identical in trim size, but vary in length from just a single photograph to 60 pages of images made at one street corner. Paul Graham's work has been widely exhibited and published for 25 years, most recently in the book American Night.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely stunning achievement   March 19, 2008

In my experience there are two types of people who are drawn to photography. One group focuses on the experience of the individual image. The other group, focuses less on the individual image and more on the overall impact -- either the ability of the photographer to create a consistent style that runs through the images or the way that the images are sequenced. In very rare cases, like Robert Frank's American's, one gets the lucky combination of both stunning individual images and stellar sequencing.

Individuals fixated on the power of the individual image will find more pop in other places. But, for those interested in how images are put together and sequenced, this is the most important project of the past decade. Graham has achieved the rarest of accomplishments -- stretching the boundaries of the media. I've only had my copy for a few days, so I can't comment on how often I'll return to it. But I can say, without hesitation, that it is a unique experience not to be missed. With over 150 years of photobooks in print, Graham has managed to create something fundamentally new.

5 out of 5 stars Best Photo Book of 2007   January 3, 2008

Virtually every "Best Photography Books of 2007" list gives this #1 position, and it deserves it.

Paul Graham and Steidl have produced a quietly astonishing book, that is truly unlike anything else out there. 12 full size hardbacks, from 8 to 64 pages, together in a single box, reflect by modest sequences of images on everyday life in today's America. Graham is one of the few photographers loyal to the core of the medium - where art and documentary instincts meet, and one of a small handful of individuals expanding the potential and language of the medium.

At $250 it may seem a lot, but is actually a bargain for 12 hardbound books, and given that only 1000 are made, is going to be an appreciating collectors item in short time.

as every single reviewer has said, this is an essential publication for anyone who cares about serious contemporary photography, and THE outstanding photography book of 2007.
