5 out of 5 stars Great book for Digital photography.   May 9, 2008

I read another Bryan Peterson book, and after finishing it, I immeidately ordered this book. For one, I like his writing style. It is not stuffy, as a matter of fact, it is kind of fun. I WILL admit, there were a few times he took it a little over-board in this book, but ultimately, that doesn't detract from such a well-written book.

This book is very good at taking us through digital photography, from setting our equipment up, to post production in Photoshop. I WILL have to admit, my BIGGEST complaint is here. I honestly feel this book is aimed at those in the amature level of photography, yet, he goes in depth about Photoshop. I would think he would be better off talking about Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The great part of Bryan Peterson's books, is you get to see the world of photography through HIS eyes. He also explains HOW he gets the shots. Most people that write books, will tell you the technical information off the exif data, but few seem to go in-depth on WHAT exactly they metered off of, and why. And, how it all interacts. I was very pleased with this book, and would recommend it to any beginner, without a second thought. I would recommend it to most amatures, for access to some fun styles he has. He as been taking pictures for nearly as long as I have been alive, but he has that playful edge in what he does. That playfulness, and enjoyment of the medium, shines through.

4 out of 5 stars A well-illustrated introductory text   October 28, 2007

This book provides a great introduction to digital photography. It is illustrated with outstanding images taken by the author. Even if you know a fair amount about digital photography, you will learn new things from this book. I know I did.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   October 4, 2007

This book is dangerous for those who don't understand the computer side of photography as it is rife with errors. The most painful is in the first chapter where he attacks the JPEG format with unfortunately no understanding of why to use it and how it works claiming simply viewing a JPEG causes it to degrade. Calculations are wrong in terms of how many images of size x will fit in y MB. The list just goes on and on. I am trying to get AMPhoto to allow me to exchange this book as I have appreciated other books of theirs but this one is just horid.

This is one of the best books on photography I've read so far. Lots of great tips and ideas. I really like the down to earth language he uses to explain his concepts.
