Product Description No one knows Photoshop better than Macworld magazine graphics guru Deke McClelland - but if you need proof, take a look at Photoshop 4 Studio Secrets. Full color throughout, this may prove McClelland's best Photoshop book yet. Not only does he explain how digital graphics artists like Ron Chan, Greg Vander Houwen, and Katrin Eismann work wonders with the world's most popular image-editing program, but he also shows you step-by-step and in lustrous detail the results you can expect to achieve. Photoshop 4 Studio Secrets covers all the essential topics, whether your work is destined for the printed page, the Web, or a CD-ROM. McClelland shows you how to: Use the tried-and-true commercial art process to go from sketch to final art efficiently Work stock photography into your own creations Create three-dimensional characters without a lot of high-end rendering Integrate natural media into digital art Transform vector artwork created in Illustrator or Freehand into something extraordinary Apply distortion effects creatively - and not gratuitously Take type to new heights of distinction (Version 4 of Photoshop makes it easier than ever) Achieve the high resolutions demanded by advertising and fine art printing Take photographs with Photoshop in mind Use digital cameras Create images and interface elements for the World Wide Web Plus - as if all that weren't enough - Photoshop 4 Studio Secrets comes complete with a bonus, cross-platform CD-ROM containing over 300 megabytes of software and resources, most of which you won't find anywhere else. Too brief August 6, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not much territory covered in this book. It showed some new techniques but nothing worth half a C note. A more comprehensive coverage would have been nice. I don't think it cost more than 50 cents to manufacture that CD.
Finally, a Photoshop book that makes the reader the pro. March 26, 1998 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Deke McCleland gets to flex some of Photshop's bigger muscles in Photoshop 4 Studio Secrets. Too many books concentrate on the basic functions of Photoshop. McClelland, creator of the Photshop 4 Bible, takes a look at making truly creative images. Everything from creating smoother, slicker collages to spicing up illustrations is covered. McClelland gets some of the best Photoshop artists to show off their techniques in print, video, and internet. I give this book a 9 for three reasons. First, I kinda wished they delved a tiny bit more into the artists' thought processes behind the actions. Second, because Amazon doesn't won't let me give a rating of 9 1/2. Finally, as for the other half point to get to a perfect 10 rating, the CD didn't have any goodies to plug into the program. Oh, well. Beggers can't be choosers. My only warning is this: If you are afraid of using masks or channels, this might not be the book for you. It could be intimidating to those whose only Photoshop experience is in using filters and the clone tool. Otherwise, you won't regret parting with your cybercash for this book.
