Product Description
New York City, 1965: Two Manhattan prep school students, Carole and Naomi, make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation. Eddie, a slick Upper East Side dropout, is handsome, fatally charming, and more than willing to help the girls accomplish their goal. But on one bitterly cold holiday weekend in an isolated cabin deep in the Vermont woods, a horrifying twist develops in the plan. Before the night is over, a stomach-turning secret is sealed between friends, setting in motion a series of events that will have dire and far-reaching consequences.

Sweeping across decades, moving from New York to Vermont to California and back again, Lewis tells an utterly gripping, psychologically nuanced tale of friendship between two very different women, of the life-changing burden of a secret, the lies we tell others to save ourselves, and the lies we tell ourselves when the truth is too painful to accept.

1 out of 5 stars Disastrous! Save your money!   September 13, 2008
I never usually write reviews but this book compelled me to share. I have seldom encountered a less believable or frustrating character than the protagonist in this novel. We're expected to believe that the stupidity of the main character's actions at the age of 16 is somehow credible due to the naivete of youth. Yet, as she continues through her twenties it seems she continues to display similarly poor judgment in just about every decision she makes. What a frustrating journey for all of us! What seems to anyone else glaringly obvious from the very beginning somehow eludes our protagonist, even tho' we're told she's a smart individual. Clearly she didn't murder anyone at the age of 16, so why is she running away???? And if she IS running away, why isn't she doing a better job of it, like perhaps changing her name?? Or moving far, far, FAR away???? But no, these basic facts (despite gaping clues spattered like blood trails along the way) elude our central character and we are left feeling nothing but frustration and, ultimately, disgust. Poorly executed and confusing flashbacks only make matters worse so that in the end I really don't give a damn what happens to her. I certainly hope this author doesn't waste her time on a second disaster.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Page Turner   August 12, 2008
I see there are mixed reviews for this book. I can kinda understand that. I am one of those that enjoyed it tho. I was engrossed in it throughout the entire story. I found it to be a page turner that I was not eager to put down. My first experience with Pam Lewis, and I will be going back for more.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!   August 6, 2007
I completely disagree with anyone who saids this started off slow.
This book kept me reading from begining to end... it had just the right amount of detail, was well written and the story line was interesting. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars On the Edge of My Seat Experience....   July 27, 2007
Loved this book! Bought it while on vacation and it just about overshadowed all the fun things we were doing in California (pssstt...that's how much I liked this book). One can only feel sorry for the main character, Carol. She typifies the average nerdy, overweight, only-have-a-few-friends student one sees groping down school halls hoping not to be noticed; and the gullibility of a 16 year old in those times. Despite some other reviews on this book, I can see why Carol could live a lie to cover up a deep, dark secret. No different than victims of abuse who do not or cannot seek help because of a myriad of fears and possible consequences. The author did a bang up job of taking the reader from a suspenseful beginning to a hip hip hooray ending with a few twists toward the latter half of the book. This book makes some of the other mysteries I've read so far, pale in comparison. Do yourself a favor and go buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Could not put this one down!   June 14, 2007

This was a really good book. It's about Carole, a smart, overweight prep-school girl who, makes a pact with her best friend Naomi, to lose their virginity before they graduate. Naomi meets Eddie at a party and he is up to the task. The threesome go to a hotel in Stowe, Vermont and Carole goes first. Before the night is over, an unexpected guest becomes an unexpected victim and the threesome make a pact to never speak of that night again. The story continues with Carole and how her life has changed forever because of that night and sporadic meetings with Eddie and Naomi have her running from her privileged and stable life. Her character is likable but frustrating. The story is riveting and full of suspense. I couldn't put it down. I liked the ending too! Highly recommend!
