Amazon.com Review If youre easily put off by purple pages festooned with hearts or photos of babies dressed like fairies, you might just miss out on this trove of practical advice on running a successful digital imaging business. All dolled up like a preteens diary, The Glitterguru on Photoshop may look flimsy at first glance, but the information within will benefit anyone who shoots images for major ad campaigns (or aspires to) and uses Photoshop for simple touch-ups or complex compositing. It's clear that author Troche-Stapp knows her stuff. In addition to commanding five-figure fees for her work as a digital imager, she is a contributing editor for PEI (Photo Electronic Imaging) magazine, and, in her role as an advice columnist, she is familiar with the real world problems people face. Her book discusses how to work with clients on a concept, prep for the photo shoot, create the image, and deliver the finished work in a professional manner and the proper format. The real nitty-gritty of being a professional photographer/digital imager is covered here, from interviewing models and creating a Web site for your business, to estimating your fee. Retouching tips include performing digital "cosmetic surgery" (like slimming down a thigh and adding voluminous hair) and using Photoshops adjustment layers, channels, and filters to achieve these affects. There's also lots of advice on seamlessly compositing backgrounds and props into images. The book ends with three case studies: a cover shoot for PEI; an image created to sell as stock; and a "portrait" of Troche-Stapps husband as a computer-chip-brained borg. Except for the above-mentioned tips, this is not a Photoshop how-to manual. Its more of a supportive outline on how to earn a living from your Photoshop creations and it may be just be the pat on the behind your business needs. --Angelynn Grant

excellent book July 24, 2008 I completely enjoyed this book. Suzette Troche-Stapp has a unique perspective on photoshop. A clear and concise roadmap of how to look at images with a different point of view. Very well written.
Misleading title and following disappointment November 17, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is really nothing: not for Photoshop'ers, not for commercial photographers, not digital artists, not digital directs.. really for nobody.. if only you wanna watch pretty pictures for one time, cause don't think you would do it second time (and there is not much to watch at anyway).
I was thinking 2 years before i finally bought this book for 20$!!! It don't worse more then 10$ and only for quality paper. I read this book for 2 days - in total for 4-5 hours not really being in run.
Through all book i found only couple useful tips, but that's it. Nothing more. Couple of retouching tips - but very custom and you don't need to buy this book to find it out.
If you really wanna study retouching - there is one lady's book you need to buy - Katrin Eismann - he is goddess of retouching.
I liked very much last chapters - was laughing very very long. It calls "Advanced Technics" i think. In beginning of article she says smth like "I don't usually use filters", but all this kinda "Advanced techniques" she does using ONLY filter and don't even give alternatives of making it as digital designer. At that place i began have doubt about her real retouching knowledges.
I was even trying to find one of filter she recommended so much, but the only like was to her website, i guess only she knows about it existanse.
They she gives advices of how to attract attention to your work. Notice that book was written in 2003. "When i started...." (it was 80's-90's)... ehm... HELLO, LADY... it's new century... there is such things as spam filters and if you send from unknown address file with attached files, it usually goes to.... RIGHT.. SPAM!!!
But from other hand this woman takes 550$ for essential retouching for children, so she has good manager skills. Unfortunately, book is not about manager skills and about everything a bit, but really about nothing.
And even cover image is made from three and if you have 1 image and you wanna make it look cool - not this case.
Useless book unless you are (or want to be) a commercial photographer April 4, 2006 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you are a portrait photographer (with no intention of moving into commercial photography) this book is a waste of money.
There is only one chapter that will be relevant to you and that is the Beauty Retouching chapter, which admittedly is quite a good read. The rest of the book is useless for portrait photographers, who will never have to deal with art directors etc. I suggest you get the sample 'Beauty Retouching' chapter off the internet and save yourself the cash!
I bought Katrin Eismann's 'Restoration and Retouching' the same time as this book and found it a good source of information on digital imaging for the portrait photographer, with chapters on Portrait and Glamour retouching.
A fairly lightweight glamor-retouching expose' April 11, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a definitive instruction book on portrait retouching, this is not the book. Readers will find the process of glamour retouching interesting: chopping inches off hips, transplating locks of hair, whitening teeth, etc. But there is not much hard information provided, only broad approaches. However, the book does provide a window into how the actual world of commercial glamour photography operates - including how art directors interface with photographers and retouchers. Troche-Stapp shows how she found a unique niche in a very competitive business. Worthwhile information for someone considering this venue as a career.
A bit misleading but that aside, its good! January 15, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The title is a bit misleading. When I got my hands on this book I thought I'd learn some cool techniques on retouching as well as how to add glitter and stuff in photoshop. Nope Sorry didn't learn how to add glitter in photoshop. But what I did learn was this. The basic business of photography from the ground up, that's portfolios, talking to art directors all the way to delivery. That's great, but what if I've already read books on those topics and have experience in that? Well then you get a 100 pages of retouching tips... is it worth it? If you've never done retouching before, then yes. If you have, you might be reading the pages and thinking "hmm, theres a better way to do this". I don't say there can only be one way to do something, but I wanted to read a book on why I should retouch this way not how to do it. That let me down. However, I don't want to let that get in the way, just remember, this book teaches you a lot in just a bit more than 200 pages. It teaches you to be a commercial artist who knows how to deal with the business as well as get the job done. However, if you want something that takes you really really deep in these two topics, then this book isn't for you.
