Amazon.com Review Production professionals who use Photoshop every day are familiar with the product's incredible richness but typically could use extra advice on getting the product to do exactly what they want. If you're a prepress or photography professional needing hands-on advice on using Photoshop's color correction features and image input and output processes, look no further than Real World Photoshop 4. The writers start off by explaining the basics of setting up a Photoshop system, addressing both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Then they teach you the essentials of Photoshop's interface and discuss essential image-editing features and issues such as color settings, color separations, resolution, and image modes. Next, you learn the techniques of using Photoshop's tonal and color correction features, adjustment layers, and image-sharpening tools. You also learn how to enhance duotones and line art and how to work with scanners and run optimal image scans. The book teaches you about using Photoshop's selection tools, such as masks, paths, and alpha channels, and about retouching images, building shadows to use in PageMaker or Quark XPress, creating silhouettes, and using Color Management Systems. Finally, you get advice on storing your images in a variety of formats, from the native Photoshop format to .GIF and .JPG, and on compressing images and outputting images to the Web. Several full-color images illustrate various color-management and image-editing issues discussed in the book.
Product Description Real World Photoshop 4 gives beginning to advanced users hands-on experience in manipulating photos, paintings, collages, and other graphical images, as well as color correction. This new edition is entirely updated to cover the new features of Photoshop 4, including Actions and Adjustment layers and is richly illustrated and full-color throughout, with hundreds of photographs, line drawings, and screenshots. Chapters include discussions on acquiring images from scanners, video, and Photo CD, correcting the color and enhancing the quality of scans, retouching images, preparing files to be printed, managing color, calibrating a system, reproducing images on press, and outputting images to paper, film, video, and the Web.

A great book for retouchers an prepress people February 23, 1999 If you are looking for serious answers to the common questions we all make in the prepress and photography crazy world about compression, targeting, scanns, curves, levels, CMYK versus RGB; RGB, CMYK,INK setups, etc. This is your book. Everything is fully covered here. I'm waiting my new Real world PSD 5 edition while I drink my coffe and process all I have learned.
Professional level bread and butter tips October 1, 1998 Bruce and David have wisely concentrated on the practical aspects of photo enhancement. It's a book for those who want to squeeze the last ouch of detail from a photo (i.e. if you ever aspire to work for National Geographic), and it'll not be for you if you're looking to dazzle with special effects. Require reading for working pros.
Better for experienced users than for beginners. August 26, 1998 The more you learn about Photoshop, the more you will see the richness of what this book has to offer. Beginners would be advised to use a more basic text rather than trying to start with this book. However, as you become more familiar with Photoshop during your learning process, you will quickly see the usefulness of this book's many tips and suggestions. The authors of this book have clearly come by their expertise through extensive professional use of this software. this is not a "wow" book. The information provided seems to be geared more to everyday practical applications.
